Ravens’ QB Tyrod Taylor says he’s ready, if needed, in Super Bowl

1.30p tyrodI caught up with former Hokies and current Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor last week to talk about the upcoming Super Bowl. The story was in today’s paper.

Here’s how it starts:

With the Super Bowl only days away, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor is fully aware just how close he is to playing a prominent role in the world’s most famous football game.

He has to be. It’s what backup quarterbacks do, even if they play behind someone as durable as Joe Flacco, who not only has started every game in his five-year pro career but also rarely comes out, even in blowouts.

Still, Taylor preps himself day in and day out. Just in case.

“If you look across the league, there are so many situations over the years, even this year, where the next man gets called,” the second-year quarterback out of Virginia Tech said. “And you have to be ready. It may come sooner than you want it. It may not come as soon as you would like it to, but you have to be ready for when it comes.”

It would be nice to see Tyrod get in for a few plays, even if he were only kneeling down to kill time at the end of the game. At least he’s on the team, and gets to share in the buildup (and hopefully the win). He’s played in NFL games, and scored a TD, so that’s something to tell the grandkids about regardless of what else does or doesn’t happen.

I am sure Tyrod is in a much better place than Alex Smith. I wish no harm on Flacco or the K-man but it would be something if both went down and Smith and Taylor had to play it out with the game on the line. I wonder who will be the best prepared emotionally?

I was quasi-forced to watch 3 quarters of a Ravens preseason game. It unfortunately clarified one thing to me about backup QB’s. Trust me, the nation does NOT want to see either starting QB get injured. We’re not talking one rung on the ladder, we’re talking most of the ladder. Like I said earlier, I hope Tyrod gets to play a few plays, even if they’re inconsequential. I’m happy for him to be on a Super Bowl team, too…

NEW TOPIC ON A SLOW DAY – UVA SEARCHES FOR A NEW OC…

It will be interesting to compare their search to VTs process. Even more, the results. Lets hear it from all of our “experts” on the RTD staff as blog commenters…

Why would Va. even need to hire another OC? What is Tom O’Brian going to do…stand around with his finger stuck in his nose?
