Signee profile: ATH Deon Newsome
Deon Newsome, the Hokies’ latest signee, has Virginia Tech in his blood.
The athlete from Hampton’s father is Myron Newsome, who played linebacker for the Hokies from 1995-96 and earned second-team All-Big East honors as a senior.
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete, the younger Newsome played quarterback and defensive back for the Crabbers last season, earning first-team All-Peninsula District honors at both positoins. He accounted for 2,168 yards (1,141 rushing, 1,027 passing) and 29 touchdowns.
As a junior, he played receiver and running back, catching 15 passes for 462 yards and running 40 times for 287 yards. He had five total touchdowns.
Despite Newsome’s offensive background, Bud Foster said he will likely start at safety or rover.
Why did he pick Virginia Tech?
“It felt like the right thing to do,” he told VirginiaSports.com. “It’s not far from home. It was down to UVa and Tech, and I didn’t want to go to UVa.”

If Deon has his daddy’s motor, I’m not surprised at all that Bud won’t let him play with that bunch on the other side of the ball. Myron was an absolute joy to watch play, and I look forward to watching his son.
Welcome, young man!
Andy, you tweeted that “Beamer said Deon Newsome, David Prince both will probably will start on offense. Can play on either side, but want to start on offense.” So you’re saying Foster and Beamer have conflicting ideas here?
It sounds like things are not settled for his position yet. I’m sure both sides see things in Newsome that they like. There are probably 4 or 5 guys who could be defensive backs or receivers. Obviously, there will be a split there.
I don’t think initial disagreement is too unusual right when guys sign.
