He played running back, receiver, punt/kick returner, defensive back and linebacker at North Stafford High, but the Hokies’ most-recent signee, Anthony Shegog, figures to be a free safety at Virginia Tech.
The Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star’s All-Area Player of the Year did a little bit of everything his senior year in high school. He accounted for 1,111 yards of offense, scored 16 touchdowns, including two on defense and two more on punt return, and had 63 tackles to go with five fumbles forced, five recovered and two interceptions.
He turned up his play in the playoffs, running for 447 yards and five touchdowns on 31 carries and making six catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Shegog was a first-team All-Commonwealth District and first-team All-Northwest Region selection two years in a row.
He’s from an athletic family. His older sistser, Chay Shegog, was a North Carolina basketball standout who currently played last season for the Connecticut Sun. Their last name is pronounced shih-GOG.
