AD Jim Weaver’s pay ranks fifth in the ACC, 28th nationally
Obviously, the focus this weekend will be basketball, with conference tournaments in full swing. But I had something left over from last week that I tweeted but didn’t blog about athletic director salaries.
USA Today, which does its annual football coaching salary database, did the same thing last week with athletic directors across the country.
Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
Virginia Tech’s Jim Weaver receives $621,529 annually, which puts him fifth in the ACC and 28th nationally. Weaver’s pay includes a $601,529 base salary with $20,000 in “other” pay. He is also eligible for bonuses up to $123,255. The report did not specify what requirement needed to be met to achieve the bonus.
If you missed Mark Berman‘s story on Weaver from last weekend, you can get to it here. Weaver, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, reiterated that he intends to remain the Hokies’ AD until his contract ends in December 2015. He’ll be 70 years old then.
Duke’s Kevin White is the highest paid of the current ACC athletic directors, earning $906,536 a year. When Notre Dame joins the league in all sports except football and hockey, Jack Swarbrick will shoot to the top. He earns $1,026,942.
Two recently-hired athletic directors – Clemson’s Dan Radakovich and Georgia Tech’s Mike Bobinski — rank second and fourth in the ACC, respectively.
Several ADs on the low end of the pay scale in the ACC have bonuses that could offset that. N.C. State’s Debbie Yow, whose total pay currently ranks eighth in the ACC, is eligible for a bonus of up to $546,000, more than her base salary.
Weaver’s potential $123,255 bonus is the third largest in the ACC to Yow and Florida State’s Randy Spetman ($330,000). If Weaver earns his entire bonus, it would vault him up to be the second-highest paid AD of current ACC schools.
Here’s a list of every AD’s total pay and potential bonus in the ACC, with members joining this summer thrown in there as well. Boston College and Miami are private institutions and didn’t have to comply to the USA Today’s public records request.

David Williams from Vandy makes $3.2 million?!?!
I’m speechless.
They justify it by saying he wears more than one hat there. Still don’t know if that is enough to earn that much.

When Jim Weaver leaves Virginia Tech there will be mixed emotions and mixed opinions about it. The good and the bad during his years at Virginia Tech are well known to us as fans, but all things are good and bad in life.
Maybe it will be time for some new ideas when he leaves at the end of 2015, and time will tell about that possibility.
These salaries are interesting to learn about.
Thank you.
Andy, you do good work.
Weaver’s hourly salary is pretty good since he only works about 2 hours per day and after the recent surgeries about 2 hours per week ???? When is VT going to retire him, soon I hope ??????
In my opinion, it is time for Jim Weaver to retire now. Some of his recent decisions, like the way he fired Seth Greenberg, do not reflect well on VT. I wish he would retire now while there is still some respect left for him.
Wow. An apologists say there will be “mixed emotions.” Really? I think Blacksburg will break forth in praising and losing their mind when Weaver retires. He will mistakenly think it’s a good bye party when it’s really a good riddance party.
Can I get a job at VT? I can make bad decisions as well as the next guy.
Weaver may keep the books in the black, but he has done a horrible job PR wise for the basketball program. He is living on the success of the football program and has ruined the momentum we had in both men’s and women’s basketball programs. He needs to retire.
Weaver reports to one person: Charles Steger. He does the 2 things a University or College President wants from the AD: 1. Make a profit (rarer than most of you think, especially at a Cow College in the middle of nowhere) and 2. Avoid the really bad scandals. Steger is 66 or 67 and might be retiring soon. If that is his plan, he’d want Weaver to stick around so that the new President can appoint his/her own AD. I think I’d want a young Pres appointing a young and sassy AD rather than Steger replacing Weaver with a Weaver-like “safe” choice who’ll have at least a 5-year contract.
It’s interesting how many people who are loyal to the Hokies have to place all their wishes on the ‘Hope’ that many new people not even hired by the university will actually produce results at their jobs, while the Hokie apologists constantly nag us to ‘Be patient. Waits a few more years to allow (fill in the blank).’
Just make sure you continue to financially support the team during this false, lying ‘break in period’. ‘After all, your money is the sole contribution we want from you. Shut up and pay us more, while you get worse seating and parking, year after year after year. Never speak to question us. Just be thankful we allow you the privilege of our attention at funding time…’
Andy, Jim Weaver should work one year for ZERO pay. He has destroyed the VT men’s and women’s basketball program. He should resign and take care of his failing health.
GO HOKIES!!!!! Shen Valley Hokie
I really don’t know anyone who thinks that Weaver is a great AD, but in all honestly outside of football and basketball (mens variety) most don’t care what he’s done. You could get rid of almost every female and male sport and no one would notice except for their parents who come to see them play/compete.
So he’s had two jobs, keep Frank Beamer happy (in other words mind his own business because if he thinks he runs Frank Beamer he’s out of his gourd) and keep the Basketball program on the track Seth Greenberg had them on. The former consists of handing Frank a rubber stamp (I could do that) and he screwed up the later like nobody’s business. There is no single less shameful event within VT sports than the way Seth Greenberg was fired and in this fans opinion that he was fired at all.
I don’t expect that Weaver was supposed to make every Football kickoff start at Happy hour, but I certainly expected him to live by the adage “do no harm”. Mark my words, he set the VT basketball program back decades. His actions were an embarassment to this university.
VTR, while I agree that the handling of the Greenberg firing was nearly as bad as it gets, it pales in comparison to the way that Frank Beamer shielded Marcus Vick and sold himself out for the hope that Marcus would give Frank the chance to ‘replay’ his MNC shot with Michael. That was worse.
What Weaver did, however, will resonate for far longer – as I doubt the VT basketball programs – EITHER one, returns to the levels enjoyed under Greenberg & Henrickson within the next two decades.
All it would take is financial commitment, and actually caring on the part of the University and the Athletic Department.
Instead, we hear diatribes by Weaver about false, lying ‘family values’ when he himself doesn’t even bother to attend the final game of Erick Green.
Cue the apologists, trying to reroute us down a tangent, instead of discussing intellectually the black hole of leadership created by Jim Weaver…
CR – post #13 just isn’t true. Beamer threw him out. O U T. Did he give Marcus too many chances? Maybe. Hard to tell. I wasn’t there on the inside and NEITHER WERE YOU. Is Beamer responsible for that guy? NO. N O.
You are in rare form today. Hemerroids?
An AD that only cares about Football like Weaver has been exposed now for far too long. Whether or not the University remains satisified with the image of a so called Football school monicure only will determine the length of his tenure. Mens and Women Basketball teams cellar dwellers. VT sports is not an overall package, it evolves only with Football with Weaver-You reap what you sow.
Zman, Beamer didn’t toss Marcus, Steger & Weaver actually did it, because Beamer refused to do so. Beamer was forced to stand at the podium while the deed was done, but he did not do it himself.
We can argue about the whole Marcus saga, but neither of our minds will change. I do think Beamer gave Marcus too many second chances, and by doing so enabled his actions. If you disagree, well, that’s what you & I do – often disagree about our favorite college team.
CR and Zman, I’ll have to go in the middle. I agree that Marcus was given way too many chances, but I do believe Coach Beamer had finally hit his high water mark and had a hand in Marcus’ expulsion.
An AD should be judged on the production of the entire sports rogram and not just one sport. Overall UVA has a better Athletic program as a whole and their AD is paid less. ie Baseball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Basketball, etc. (I’m a Hokie)
Whlie Mr. Weaver has done a reasonably good job with football, I agree he has done massive damage to men’s and women’s basketball. President Steger should have fired him immediately after he botched the Greenberg affair. Like him or not (I did), Seth Greenberg made VT basketball relevant in the ACC from the get-go. Weaver has massive health problems and wants to stay on until 2015? Gimme a break! Thank you Mr. Weaver, but for the good of Virginia Tech, you should step down.
Hey Trevor – I’ve seen Ace Ventura When Nature Calls too lol
