It’s Virginia Tech’s pro day, plus some 6 a.m. workout notes
Virginia Tech’s NFL hopefuls will work out in front of scouts at the team’s pro day in Rector Field House today. The workouts are closed to the media, although we’ll be able to talk to players afterward to see how they did. I’ll have an update later this afternoon.
As of 9 a.m., 18 NFL teams are in town for the Hokies’ pro day. Expect all of the players from the combine – Marcus Davis, Corey Fuller, Bruce Taylor, Nick Becton and Vinston Painter – to do some stuff for scouts, in addition to players like Alonzo Tweedy and Martin Scales, who will have their first chance to do so.
This was also interesting:
Former WVU QB Pat White will throw to the Hokie receivers today for pro day.

Since Logan Thomas is still a college athlete, he can’t throw in front of the NFL scouts. This isn’t unusual. Former Mountaineers quarterback Jarrett Brown threw for Jarrett Boykin and Danny Coale at last year’s pro day.
Meanwhile, the current Hokies are going through their week’s worth of 6 a.m. conditioning workouts. Today was the third workout. Frank Beamer‘s website has been updating which players have earned effort awards. Here they are by day:
Day 1: J.R. Collins, Kyle Fuller and Kyshoen Jarrett
Day 2: Fuller, Jarrett, Andrew Miller, Tariq Edwards, James Gayle, Corey Marshall, Dadi Nicolas, Matt Roth, Tyrel Wilson, J.C. Coleman, Daniel Dyer, Willie Byrn, Charlie Meyer, Detrick Bonner, Nick Bush, Carl Jackson and Ronny Vandyke
Day 3: Fuller, Jarrett, Ryan Malleck, Zack McCray, Derek Dinardo, Josh Eberly, Edwards, Derrick Hopkins, Luther Maddy, Dewayne Alford, Woody Baron, Collins, Marshall, Roth, Wilson, Coleman, Dyer, Greg Gadell, Michael Holmes, Maurice Taylor, Kevin Asante, Byrn, Meyer, E.L. Smiling, Josh Stanford, Malcolm Westbrook, Carlis Parker, Josh Trimble, Vandyke, Bonner, Bush, Chris Caver, Der’woun Greene, Jackson, A.J. Hughes
Note that Fuller and Jarrett were the only two players to go 3-for-3. It’s also probably encouraging for Hokies fans to see Edwards and Miller on the list, considering the injuries they suffered last year.

Best to them all.
Pat White? A WVU guy? Really?
A real question: How much can they really tell about pass catching and route timing when the WRs haven’t played with the guy and he is not a current NFL QB? How do the scouts really evaluate White’s arm and accuracy vs. the WR vs. the QB on their team?
Show them who you are boys!!
Effort awards to walk-on Daniel Dyer. Great kid out of Salem. Gives his all on special teams. A lot like Dustin Pickle, another Salem product.
#1 Zman, the same question can be said for the Hokie ballers who hide behind the stopwatches of their friendly coaches. Just as some think there’s no point in having a QB or WR work out (how dumb to think they shouldn’t?!?), then what is the point in having the players run a fake 40 yard dash with totally unrealistic – as in complete lies – times?
CR – while I agree that the numbers, 40 times in particular, are always better at VT than at the combine but the NFL does the timing, not VT coaches. Andy has told us that several times. Get your head out your……
