It’s that dead time of the football calendar when the only news coming out is intermittent recruiting tidbits, but the preseason magazines are starting to come out, so I thought I’d take a look at where one pegs the Hokies this year.
Athlon Sports picks the Hokies to finish second in a crowded Coastal Division, behind Miami and ahead of Georgia Tech and North Carolina. The magazine picks them to finish 8-4, with a 5-3 division record. Tech wasn’t ranked in Athlon’s top 25.
Clemson is the pick to beat Miami in the ACC championship game.
(Full disclosure, I wrote the Hokies’ preview this year, but I didn’t contribute to any of the picks for order of finish, All-ACC teams or position rankings.)
Three Hokies were picked to the preseason All-ACC first team: defensive end James Gayle, linebacker Jack Tyler and safety Kyshoen Jarrett.
Defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins was a second-team choice, while quarterback Logan Thomas, cornerback Kyle Fuller and kicker Cody Journell made the third team.
The magazine also ranked each team’s position unit within the conference. Tech had the top defensive line, the second-best defensive backs and the fourth-best linebackers.
The quarterbacks were ranked third, behind Clemson and North Carolina, but the next best group was the offensive line at eighth. Running backs were 10th and receivers/tight ends were 14th.
