The Hokies had two cornerbacks on the Thursday night injury report. Starter Kyle Fuller is listed as questionable with a groin injury, while Brandon Facyson is doubtful after suffering a concussion on Sunday.
Questionable means a player has a 50 percent chance of playing. Doubtful means a 25 percent chance.
Facyson didn’t practice Tuesday or Wednesday after falling backward on an interception and hitting his head on the ground Sunday. The freshman has started six games this year and has four interceptions.
Exum was probably going to start in his place anyway. The senior will make his season debut after more than eight months of rehab since ACL and bone fracture surgery in February. Exum, who was a second-team All-ACC pick last year, was cleared to resume full practice on Sept. 30 but didn’t dress for the North Carolina or Pittsburgh games because he didn’t think he was ready.
The Hokies will likely use a nickel formation the majority of the time against Duke. Freshman Kendall Fuller is expected to start as the nickelback, with Exum at one corner spot. Sophomore Donovan Riley or true freshman Chuck Clark could be asked to step in if Kyle Fuller and Facyson cannot go.
Defensive end Matt Roth is listed as out with a head injury. Long snapper Joe St. Germain is doubtful with a foot injury.
