First round of Taubman Grant recipients announced

EDIT 4/25: Read the full story here.

For the past couple days, the arts and culture organizations vying for this surprise boon offered this year by Nick and Jenny Taubman have been on the edge of their seat waiting to hear whether their applications were successful. Now the results are in: 18 of 26 applicants will receive grants ranging from $100,000 to $25,000 that add up in total to $1.25 million — click here to read the breaking news story.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Nine organizations received $100,000 grants: Center in the Square, Historical Society of Western Virginia, Jefferson Center, Opera Roanoke, Roanoke Children’s Theatre, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, Science Museum of Western Virginia, Taubman Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Transportation.

Five organizations received $50,000 grants: Arts Council of the Blue Ridge, Grandin Theatre, Local Colors, Salem Museum, Southwest Virginia Ballet.

Four organizations received $25,000 grants: Apple Ridge Farms, Blue Ridge PBS, Harrison Museum of African American Culture, Studio Roanoke.

The program specifically benefits qualifying nonprofit institutions within a 20-mile radius of Roanoke, and ends after next year.

What’s your take on this program and what it means for the region?

I have to admit to being amused that the museum got one of the large grants. That just kind of tickles me. But aside from that, I think the program is very generous and will go a long way to keeping some of those organizations afloat. I still wish the requirements would make it possible for more groups to try for the future grants…but it is what it is. I’m very happy for the groups that were awarded the grants. Congratulations!

That is wonderful news! Thank you so much to Nick and Jenny Taubman for being arts proponents. We need more like you in the world. Congratulations to the recipients and thank you Mike for keeping us informed!
