Check It Out

Looking for something to do this holiday weekend? See our picks for some fun local events.

Scenes from the Geek Mob

ETA: The event and an accompanying photo registered on the USA Today PopCandy blog (click link to view.) Congratulations, folks!

Organizer Jason Turner has posted photos on Flickr of Sunday’s Geek Mob at the Roanoke City Public Libraries main branch. Members of Star City Roller Girls and cast members of the comedy show “Tuned Out” were among the attendees. Check out the full gallery by clicking here.

Blair Peyton and Bryan Hancock of 'Tuned Out' (which, by the way, starts airing this coming Sunday night or Monday morning, however you parse it, at 12:30 a.m on WSLS) take part in a geek mob celebrating 'Read Comics in Public Day.'

We only decided a couple of weeks ago to have this event so we were really pleased with the turn out. We are already planning on things for next year’s event so we’re expecting it to be much bigger. My wife, Brenda, has already contacted the Guinness Book Of World Records for the event so hopefully we get a giant crowd and fill Elmwood park. We hope to see you and everyone there.

Mike, thanks for getting behind this. Wasn’t able to make it out, but loved the idea. Really appreciate the guys at roanokedoesnotsuck.com for backing the cool and the quirky in the City. This all gave me an idea, do you think you could solicit links to websites and facebook pages for local art’s groups and post them here or in a link that is accessible from the Entertainment page? I think we would all appreciate it.

You know, I’ve from time to time contemplated adding a set of regional arts and culture website links for this blog. I worry it could quickly reach tl;dr status if I tried to be all-inclusive; and on the flip side, if I exclude anyone, what does that look like? So that’s why I never gotten far with it. But I’m open to suggestions, for certain.

Yeah, I can see that. What about instead of one full list you did ocassional list sub-divided by genre? Then you could link to the prior list in each subsequent one.

As in blog entries with lists of links?

  7. Patrick | September 1, 2011 at 8:34 pm

I think that would work. For example:

    GENRE

    GROUP NAME- http://www.groupwebsite.com; http://www.facebook.com/pages/groupfacebookpage

Thanks, Patrick! I shall ponder and mull.
