Roanoke Marginal Arts Festival to return Thursday, Feb. 16

The Roanoke Marginal Arts Festival returns for its fifth year with its chaos a little more controlled. Though not completely.
Founded by artist Brian Counihan, the Marginal Arts Festival celebrates art that’s from the fringe, that’s too often overlooked, that doesn’t easily fit in standard categories.
The eclectic festival’s schedule (Feb. 16-21) has often featured events taking place simultaneously in multiple locations. This time it will be a little easier to get to everything, as for the most part, each day of the festival is centered in a different place, organized by volunteers from the participating communities.
Counihan said the new approach results from feedback from previous Marginal Arts events.
Another difference is that there are no festival passports for sale that offer admission or discounts to the various events. Most of the events are free, and for those that aren’t, admission must be paid for through the hosting venue.
Donations are welcome, and at some events donations will allow participants a “backstage pass” to meet the artists and performers.
