Timothy Zahn was an award-winning science fiction writer before he became involved in the “Star Wars” universe. Afterward, he became a New York Times-best-selling author.

His first trilogy of “Star Wars” novels, beginning in 1991, with “Heir to the Empire” have been credited with single-handedly reviving interest in the franchise, ultimately spurring George Lucas to create his second trilogy of films.

And given the second trilogy’s flat characterizations and awful dialogue, some fans wish Lucas had adapted Zahn’s stories instead of making up his own.

Zahn, who is a writer guest of honor at the SheVaCon 20 science fiction convention in Roanoke (Friday-Sunday), will give a presentation Thursday at the Roanoke City Public Library on Jefferson Street about writing in the “Star Wars” universe. He will also be flanked by fully armored Storm Troopers. The white-armored troops are members of the 501st Legion, a worldwide “Star Wars” fan organization.
