“The Arctic Circle” opens at Mill Mountain Theatre on Valentine’s Day

In partnership with Mill Mountain Theatre, the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University will present “The Arctic Circle (and a recipe for Swedish Pancakes)” by Samantha Macher, a Master’s of Fine Arts candidate in the school’s graduate program in playwriting. “Arctic Circle” opens on Mill Mountain’s Waldron Stage in Center on Church on Valentine’s Day.

In an email, Macher described her play as “a comedy about a woman in a troubled marriage who travels through time, space and Sweden to re-examine her past relationships for solutions to her newly found troubles,” adding, “it’s mostly an examination of marriage and love in general, and the lengths you’ll go to in order to preserve the ideal of either. Even at the expense of yourself.”

After the play is finished in Roanoke, the production will move to New York City for another week of performances at the Playwrights Horizons studio in Manhattan. The director of “Arctic Circle,” Bob Moss, founded Playwrights Horizons in 1971 and ran it for 10 years.

Performances take place 8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15, $10 if purchased in advance. For more information, call 556-5396 or visit millmountain.org.

The Hollins Theatre box office is selling a $15 pass that includes admission to both “Arctic Circle” and “Bellocq’s Ophelia.” Both plays are also included in the schedule of the six-day Roanoke Marginal Arts Festival that kicks off Thursday on the Hollins campus.
