What’s it all about?

Counterbalance Festival provides a service to over 25 female artists, encompassing works of theatre, dance, photography, poetry, film, visual art, and music to come together to produce a weekend-long festival in Roanoke Virginia.. My main objective is to explore our ethical responsibility of making high quality female artists’ work accessible to the community.

Why all Women?

There is a system, that today may not intentionally exclude women from the arts, but that respects art by males as a part of a system. The art we’re used to seeing in museums and galleries is made by over 90 percent men- so an aesthetic is developed from a male perspective that becomes a standard. Any artists with perspectives outside of this standard take years to be appreciated- thus making the fight to be seen and heard much needed for Female perspectives in art. Weʼre here to change that model in the town of Roanoke. Thus our title: Counterbalance… to balance out the imbalance we find in the art world today.
