OneBeat musicians make Walmart flash mob video
Is this the first U.S. Department of State-sponsored flash mob? Ahead of the OneBeat performances tonight and Saturday (click here to read more) Jefferson Center linked to this video showing the fellows of the program making music in the wild, a.k.a. a Florida Walmart.

The guy with the hoodie has skillz, other than that I’m unimpressed. The idea is interesting, but I’ve been a percussionist for over ten years and I can honestly say that these rhythms are extremely simple. With the exception of hoodie guy, you can find more talent in an African drum circle. If I’m trying to buy a frozen dinner that day, I’m more pissed off than impressed.
Thanks for the comment, Dusty. It’s probably worth mentioning, though, that I don’t think your assessment of the quality of talent involved is accurate. These folks play a lot of different instruments — they just happen to be acting as rhythm section for this one piece.
No comment, however, as to the effect the performance had on frozen dinner purchases.
Checked the link out. They do seem pretty cool. But the walmart performance just didn’t do it for me. Maybe it’s just that the wal-mart setting zaps my ability to enjoy such things.
As a former Walmart employee (as of many years ago) I tend to think I’d've gotten a kick out of that if it happened at the store I worked at. I am guessing, though, based on the number of people in the store with them, and the lack of lines at the registers, that they must have done that very late at night, heh.
