I’m in the office today (after a week-long bout with the flu) trying to get a head start on 2013. Say hello in the comments if you’re around.
The Market Gallery
Featured Artists Dan Henderson and Sharon Mirtaheri
January 2 – January 26
Opening Reception: Friday, January 4, 2013
The Market Gallery featured artists are Dan Henderson and Sharon Mirtaheri from January 2 through January 26. Please join us to meet and chat with the artists at their reception Friday, January 4, Art by Night, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Henderson will provide a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. and Mirtaheri at 7 p.m.
Dan Henderson has started using infrared film to capture familiar landscapes in an unfamiliar way. Henderson says, “The first time I drove past Mountain View Church I noticed how the arbor vitae trees seemed to be emulating the steeple, and I wanted to make a photograph that reflected that impression. I knew that infrared film would best express my vision, and this was the perfect opportunity to learn to use a new material that has interested me for a long time.” Henderson will discuss this and other new infrared photographs and how infrared film produces these unique effects in his presentation during Art by Night.
Sharon Mirtaheri, continues to discover the intricacies of Encaustic Wax Collage while studying at Hollins University. Mirtaheri notes, “Exploring the incredible versatility of this wax medium along with recycled and found items gives me unlimited amounts of inspiration. Organic nature themes still move me as I continue to study a professor’s gift to me of an old botany book. The underlying patterns of a tree’s interior vascular cambium for example and bark patterns in photos that I have taken on various trips influence my work. How the Universe repeats patterns astonishes me.” Mirtaheri will talk about the possibilities this ancient medium offers and various techniques she uses in her collage work during her talk at 7 p.m. on January 4.
The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday – Saturday. And is located at 23 Salem Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24011, the corner of Wall St and Salem Ave in Roanoke’s historic downtown market.
