Arts extra: an animated “Calvin & Hobbes”

Major websites are abuzz this week with this likely unauthorized fan animation of a classic “Calvin & Hobbes” strip, created with respect and panache by Adam Brown, an animator for Comedy Central’s “Ugly Americans.” Watching it, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. When a hooker pretends to be Elizabeth Taylor, it doesn’t make her eyes become violet.

Don’t we have some ‘Jenny T from the block’ project to discuss? Some other black hole of revenue?

This is a very strange comment.

I think I’m glad I’m not smart enough to understand that.

Cool animated short. Always loved Calvin & Hobbes. I actually use a pic from the strip as my twitter photo. Calvin’s love of snow rivaled mine.

Ignore it. Calvin & Hobbes – one of the best! I enjoyed this immensely! I always loved the Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons, but all of the strips were wonderful. I totally related to Calvin as a kid, and still do (I’m almost 50). :)

@Brian and @HerbalTee: Yeah, I have a lot of fond memories of that strip. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite. Spaceman Spiff? The aforementioned Snow Goons?

Transmogrifier was a cool invention – you can do a lot with a cardboard box!

Thank you for reminding me about the Transmogrifier! Awesome.

My teenage daughter tells me I have the brain of a 5yr old boy (not expected in a mom, but it keeps everyone laughing) – I thank her often. I hope I never lose my imaginative powers! Or questionable sense of humor! I owe a lot of it to growing up with 5 siblings and love of cartoons like Calvin & Hobbes, The Far Side, etc.

Let’s hear it for not growing up! Cheers!

Reality continues to ruin my life. Getting an inch of snow is like winning ten cents in the lottery. You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don’t help. What’s your favorite Calvinism? (the underpants one is a classic)

Oh, jeez, it’s been so long since I’ve read or re-read it … I have to agree though that “Verbing weirds language.”

Public library usually has a few copies of the collections in book form. Good to re-read. I laugh out loud every single time. Remember the Get Rid Of Slimy girlS club (GROSS)?

Yes I do. My wife always speculated that Calvin and Suzie would end up married.

Has anyone heard the theory that the strip “Frazz” is intended to be something of a C&H homage, IE the title character is a grown-up Calvin? It’s an interesting theory.

Best comic strip since Calvin & Hobbes ended somewhat recently. I think “Cul De Sac” was given an audition by the RT, but readers didn’t respond. It’s a brilliant strip, and although I’ve read all the collections I keep it in my iComics rotation — right next to C&H.

Frazz seems too mature to be a grown-up Calvin to me, though I can’t deny the resemblance.
