Hollins student asks Mila Kunis to dance, sets Web abuzz
UPDATE 5/22: Did Bledsoe’s dance invite to Kunis inspire this spoof by The Onion? It certainly seems possible.

UPDATE 5/16: Click here to read today’s story in which I interviewed Bledsoe about her venture. An excerpt follows:
Hollins University senior Kirsten Bledsoe recorded a video asking actress Mila Kunis to be her date to the school’s Cotillion dance.
“I kind of did it on a whim,” thinking the request would be funny, she said. After all, Kunis (“That ’70s Show,” “Black Swan”) recently told interviewer Chris Stark she says “Yes” to anything, and when he tried to ask her out, she never actually said “No.” Besides, Bledsoe’s been a fan of the actress for many years, and they share a love of Blue Moon beer.
The 21-year-old film major from Arlington posted the video to YouTube on March 10, not expecting it to go viral.
ORIGINAL POST: Here’s an interesting cultural news tip we’ve received. NOTE: This video contains adult language.
Tipster Charlsie Niemiec writes:
Hollins University senior Kirsten Bledsoe has been featured on the Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, and Buzzfeed in the last 24 hours for asking celebrity Mila Kunis to the end of the year Hollins Cotillion. Kirsten is a lesbian student who is speaking out on LGBTQ issues in hopes that Mila will attend as her date!
The Daily Beast writes:
Prompted by the recent viral video of BBC Radio reporter Chris Stark’s unconventional interview with Kunis last week, in which Kunis joked that she never turns down a date, Bledsoe figured she had nothing to lose. “Why not make a video asking her to my last school dance?” she told The Daily Beast, mentioning that she “was appalled” that Stark had never heard of Blue Moon beer.
Buzzfeed points out that this tactic (asking Kunis out via YouTube) has worked before, for a Marine serving in Afghanistan.

I’m sure that the Hollins gals think this is cute, but I have to think that Ms Kunis is going to eventually regret that she ever resolved to be open to her fan base. Request after request, all eager to persecute her at the first chance of her turning down the ‘opportunity’ for their 15 minutes of fame.
It’s all a big yawn, except to those who desire to make a flag waving moment out of it. Why don’t they just do a Harlem Shake video?
Mila Kunis is now stuck in between a rock and a hard place. If she accepts, then the rumors will start by saying she is a lesbian/bisexual. If she turns it down, then the LGBTQ community will get upset and turn on her. Why even bother to ask a celeb to a dance like this? Are people really this desperate for fame?
You guys sound awfully worried for Mila. I suspect she can handle herself.
This is not about being gay or straight. It’s about Kirsten just wanting to show someone she admires a good time. This is her last school formal ever, so why not go out with a bang? She states outright that she understands that getting a yes would be a longshot and understands if Mila doesn’t accept. These is no risk of “persecution.” Maybe on the internet, but I know for a fact the Hollins Community would not think any less of Mila for not accepting.
If she doesn’t accept, I bet she at leasts makes a statement in favor of LGBTQ rights. She might even do more than that (i.e. send a personalized video or letter)
I’d date Mila Kunis. I’d date the heck out of her.
Support the LGBT community in every way, but I like to think Hollins has a more serious reputation regarding diversity and inclusion than a stunt like this. Hollins women, and men, have more to offer than attention seeking for its own sake.
#3 MA, you sound awfully concerned that someone posts something that is not a cheerleading comment of the action. I must be incorrect in mistaking this for a comment section on a blog. If I’d know that only one mantra were to be supported, I’d have paid my club dues in advance.
As to the desperate grab for attention by the release & promotion of the video clip, well, you don’t get it both ways.
I’ll stick with my assessment – Ms Kunis opened Pandora’s Box by having a sense of humor with her fan base over the initial acceptance. My question is – how many more ‘proposals’ should she abide before declining and inevitably be labeled insensitive? If that mere question raises your hackles, as you showed above it did, then my point is already proven.
Ms Bledsoe also proved my point – she’s riding her 15 minutes of fame, we’ll see how she responds when not everyone is ready to chuckle and applaud her (non)ingenuity.
Hmm, my first attempt at a post was not posted. I guess since I am not in support of the gay movement. I believe; as do many others, that it is wrong and not natural. It is a choice and hopefully, the young lady, (Ms. Kunis), will simply ignore your invitation; as is her choice.
I have to say I agree with the first Hollins grad to post here. The student involved can admire Mila all she wants, but most people don’t invite celebs they admire to college dances. This seems a bit like a cheap stunt (one that has been fairly overplayed over the past couple of years, if I may say so). I don’t think a Hollins student needs to invite a celeb to a dance in order to make an outward statement about the LGBT community and the support it receives from the school.
I just want to add generally that though this story intersects with an issue that many are passionate about, it’s possible to discuss it without name-calling and insults, and I hope folks will abide by that. (And to clarify, I am not referring to any comment currently posted.)
“The gay movement”? Really? You can believe that it is not natural. You can also believe that snowmen will come alive and dance around your yard. But in both cases you are scientifically wrong. But only one of those examples makes you a bad person.
I see, that despite the RT’s hopes, this didn’t develop into an inflammatory & highly clicked post. As others have posted, without being chided by an overly sensitive monitor, there are lots of ways to generate humorous and pertinent discussion.
Instead, we have the hackneyed attempt to hem in Ms Kunis into a political discussion, when she’s just interested in being receptive to her fan base.
I see where Kate Upton – VERY topical and ‘edgy’ was invited to one of these overplayed events. It’s interesting that no cognition of such an action was considered when the Hollins student decided to hype her name and garner some inevitable national attention. Like I said before, she got her 15 minutes, which was the primary goal. The resultant job she desired from it will require more, though.
