Two years ago, dancers with Salem’s Southwest Virginia Ballet traveled to Prague to take part in the New Prague Dance Festival and ended up winning some awards. They’re returned this summer, and, just as last time (click here to read the 2011 series), I’m posting the updates the dancers send me on their progress. Here’s the first post, from 17-year-old Clayton Willis of Patrick Henry High School. — MikeA
It’s finally here! After months of excitement, weeks of costume making, and one intense week of everyday rehearsals, a group of thirteen local dancers are traveling to the New Prague Dance Festival in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. This group is a part of the Southwest Virginia Ballet. Part of this troupe visited Prague two years ago, winning first place in costumes and classical dance. Many hours of thought has gone into making this trip even better. The luggage situation was a problem for some of us, considering the 50 lb weight limit. After repacking once, twice, in some cases three times, the luggage was passed and we are now sitting here trying to entertain ourselves with goofy pictures and a ballet class. We board soon with excited jitters and quivering anticipation to see the beautiful city of Prague after a short layover in Paris. Already this seems like it will be a phenomenal trip!
