Wednesday evening I visited the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, where consultants from Arup listened and made recordings as musicians played on the performance hall stage, in order to “tune” the hall … that is, to determine what adjustments need to be made to maximize the acoustic quality for various types of performances.
Blacksburg High School student Megan Carlier played her cello to help with the tuning. Even in this shakycam video taken with my iPhone, I think you can get a good hint of the hall’s impressive resonance.
During my visit I learned that the Center’s opening concert on Nov. 1 by the Philip Glass Ensemble has sold out. Expect more updates on Center’s progress in the coming weeks.
