The book club dilemma

I love my book club, or as my husband likes to call it my food-and-wine club.

He’s not too far off because the meetings are a great occasion to get together with friends and share our favorite recipes and vintages.

But we also read and discuss the book.

As often happens when other people choose your reading material for you, sometimes you LOVE it, and sometimes, well, you just cannot connect with the story.

Both scenarios are OK since it makes for a lively discussion, but it can make for some laborious hours trudging through a book that you just don’t enjoy.

So, book club members, what do you do if you just do not groove with the monthly selection? Stick with it and be honest at the meeting? Or give up on the book, passively listen to the discussion and enjoy the appetizers?

Our club does each of the things mentioned in your final paragraph: some put the book down, some trudge through in spite of their distaste for the book and ALWAYS, there is lively discussion, pro & con. Often, the reward is in sticking with the book and being glad of it but there are stinkers, too. In the end the food & wine are enjoyed by all and we head home enlightened and happy.

About this blog

Books editor Suzanne Wardle read cereal boxes, lists of ingredients and just about anything when she was a child, so it’s no wonder she grew up to read for a living at a newspaper. She posts reviews, news, discussion topics and musings on literature of all types. When she’s not reading, she’s out on the greenway with the dog, testing recipes in the kitchen and trying to persuade friends to watch bad monster movies with her.
