Book Chat: What are you reading?

Hope all of you and your loved ones are doing well after the storm. I didn’t notice any damage to our house, but I didn’t look very hard; when I left this morning it was still fairly dark outside. I am grateful no trees were down though, and we didn’t lose power like many others have.

School’s out today, and boy do I wish I was home with my daughter. It’d be a nice day to curl up with a blanket and a good book. My house is clean so no laundry or vacuuming is calling my name. It’s cold outside so there’d be no reason to leave the house. A perfect day for a good book.

However, I’m not currently reading anything. I finished most of the Sookie Stackhouse series and am taking a break, but that’s not because there’s a shortage of books on my to-be-read list.  I still need to finish “Game of Thrones” and the last two Sookie Stackhouse books. I even borrowed Harris’s short story collection from the library. And that’s just the most current books I’ve looked at, there are plenty of others I’m interested in. The reason I’m taking a break is because I’ve been thinking of trying my hand a NaNoWriMo so I’ve been reluctant to start something new this close to November 1.

But what about you? What are you reading or looking forward to reading? Anything you’d recommend?

There are 2 books coming out next week that I’ve been looking forward to for months: Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance, the latest installment in Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan saga (otherwise known as “the Ivan book”), and Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel Flight Behavior. I don’t often jump at newly-released books, especially at hardcover prices, but these two authors are among my favorites. Both come out next Tuesday last time I checked, so I suspect I’ll be headed to Barnes & Noble after voting.

Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon. I like it, but at 900+ pages, it’s a little long.

I’m re-reading my way through Laurie King’s Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series. Finished “O, Jerusalem” last night.

I just finished “A Storm of Swords,” the third book in George R.R. Martin’s series. I’m addicted!

I’m still only half way through the first one. They’re so big. But good! How long as it taken you to get through three of them?

About this blog

Books editor Suzanne Wardle read cereal boxes, lists of ingredients and just about anything when she was a child, so it’s no wonder she grew up to read for a living at a newspaper. She posts reviews, news, discussion topics and musings on literature of all types. When she’s not reading, she’s out on the greenway with the dog, testing recipes in the kitchen and trying to persuade friends to watch bad monster movies with her.
