I’m very excited, on this rainy Monday, to have in my possession a copy of “The Six-Gun Tarot” to give away.
The author, R. S. “Rod” Belcher, is from Roanoke. He grew up near Salem and went to Glenvar High School.
“The Six-Gun Tarot,” his debut novel, was published by Tor in January. It’s been described as a mash-up between, horror, Western, romance, and steampunk.
“Publisher’s Weekly” gave a good description. “Against the backdrop of Chinese and Mormon mythology and the Civil War, with a bit of Frankenstein for color, the mix of theology, frontier justice, and zombies is merely cover for an intense and irreverent exploration of good, evil, and free will.”
Our review that ran in Sunday’s paper called it, “a well-written first novel, and the start of a promising career.”
Rod was here recently for a Q&A. During the Q&A we talked about his audience and what the book was about. He said, “It’s a little bit of Western. It’s a little bit of romance. I’d say it’s pretty heavy horror, but then there’s also a lot of fantastic elements. I think it’s also very optimistic. A lot of horror is really dark. There’s a lot of influence of H.P. Lovecraft in the story and my book. And Lovecraft is very, very; don’t read Lovecraft when you’re down cause you’ll be even more down after you read. I have some Lovecraft influences in there, but I also think I have a lot of humanist, positive, affirming sort of characters and messages. I tried to make the book not be quite so darkety dark, dark.” Read more »

Welcome to Monday’s book thread. I’ll post this periodically so we can keep up with what everyone is reading.
Please tell me what you’ve recently read or what you just started. Once you’ve finished the book, please come back and let us know how it turned out and whether or not you suggest we read it too.
And for this week, also let me know your favorite place to read. Since the weather is warming up, do any of you have a special place under a shade tree somewhere?
This week I’m reading a western/urban fantasy mash-up by local author R.S. Belcher called “The Six-Gun Tarot.” I’ll be doing an interview with him on Wednesday, so look for a Q&A coming soon.
When it’s warm out, I like to sit in the rocking chair on my front porch and read. Unfortunately though, I don’t have that much free time during the day so I usually do my reading in the bed right before I go to sleep. That’s probably one of the reasons I have such strange dreams.
Your turn. What are you reading?
Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s books & talk schedule.
Janet Strugill was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011. She passed away in January 2012 before her son C.R. “Cliff” Sturgill could fulfill his dream of publishing a collection of short stories and giving it to her as a Christmas gift.
“At the heart of her selflessness was pure love. She was the most loving and caring person you could ever meet,” Sturgill describes her on his FirstGiving fundraiser page.
After his mother’s death Sturgill was inspired to finish his book and publish it in her honor.
“My mother was always such a positive force in my life and encouraged me to pursue my dream of writing over the years. I regret that she will never be able to see my first book, but hopefully I can at least honor her memory through my writing and share some of the love and hope that she embodied. I also hope to raise at least $1,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and help them achieve their goal of doubling the survival rate of pancreatic cancer by 2020. If my donations can help someone else survive, or at least live a little longer with, pancreatic cancer, then maybe my mother’s death won’t have been in vain,” said Sturgill.
“Dreams from the Heart” is a collection of ten stories falling under the categories ‘Dreams of Love & Romance,’ ‘Dreams of Hope & Family,’ ‘Dreams of Other Things,’ and ‘End of Dreams.’ The stories were written over several years and include positive and inspiring messages with an overall theme of love can conquer all.
Sturgill graduated from Virginia Tech and lives in Smyth County, Va.
So far he has raised $550 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
