Kite fliers entertained about 50 people Saturday with expert flying at Virginia Mountain Winery, one of three wineries on the Botetourt Wine Trail.
Kite flying, music and wine tasting abound this spring at the three Botetourt wineries. David and Marie Gibbs brought in two kite fliers from the Shenandoah Valley and New River Valley to exhibit the flying of large decorative kites at Virginia Mountain Vineyards.
Virginia Mountain Vineyards is located on 4204 Old Fincastle Road just north of Fincastle. "Just follow the signs," laughed Gibbs.
Regarding the kites, said Gibbs, "My daughter found them and a whole group of people across the area are dedicated to kite flying. They even have competitions." Gibbs, who is a forensic science specialist for the Commonwealth of Virginia in his day job, has a plethora of activities planned for the spring and summer.
The other two wineries, Blue Ridge Vineyards in Eagle Rock and Fincastle Vineyards in Nace also have lined up a series of events for the spring.
Looking for something with an adult focus to do after a morning of rec baseball and softball? Leave the kids at home and head out onto the wine trail.
For the month of April these are how the vineyards have arranged schedules of events.
On April 12, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Virginia Mountain Vineyard will hold a by reservation event of tasting and chocolate. The cost is $12 for tasters and will include a wine glass. They will instruct patrons on the fine art of pairing the two decandent treats-- wine and chocolate.Call 473-

At Blue Ridge Winery in Eagle Rock which is east of the little hamlet of Eagle Rock about two miles on Rt. 43 and a right onto Shiloh Drive to the very end, Barbara Kolb and Jim Holaday, the owners will be hosting an event called Spring Fest with the music of Robyn Dobbyns.The Botetourt Wine Trail. "We offer a free tee shirt when anyone visits all three-- give it to them at the third vineyard visited." said Kolb.
Wine tasting includes a glass and beautiful mountain views. The event will be held from 2- 5 p.m. for more information, call 798-7642.
Over at Fincastle Vineyard, the Sawyers will be traveling to a wine event in Clarksville on April 26. The first event on site is May 17, according to the website and will feature jazz music on the lawn and is $10 for tasting and that includes the glass. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the view in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They also operate a Bed and Breakfast at the site. For more information call 591- 5900.
All of the wineries are open most week ends for general tastings and selling their wares. Call ahead just in case.
