Drewry, Dennis N. Harris and Ed Kozlowski. A reception in their honor will be held on Sunday June 1, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Fincastle Baptist Church. Shires joined the department on July 1, 1980, Drewry on October 19, 1977, Harris on May 14 1990 and Kozlowski on August 15, 1998. Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle commended them on the fine work they have done for the department over the years. Rain doesn't dampen Breckinridge Field DayThe Breckinridge Elementary field in Fincastle was empty on field day today, but inside the gym things rocked and rolled. A little rain could not dampen the spirits of the Breckinridge Bears. In the morning grades 3rd -5th had relays and events and in the afternoon, preschool through 2nd grade had a "field day" in the gym! Relays are a component, matching grade level t-shirts are a component and parent volunteers help PE teacher Tony Hart keep the students moving. A particular favorite is the Army crawl through a tunnel of legs. Field Day has been an annual event for at least two decades and is a fun way to be fit. Club members learned many interesting and useful facts about wild animals in our area, including how to determine if an animal is truly orphaned, whom to call and what to do if they discover a wild animal in need. The club wishes to thank all the volunteers at Roanoke Wildlife Rescue and especially director Dorothy Runion for granting them this unique opportunity. James River advances in regionalsThe reports are in-- all four of the sports teams at James River High School in the regionals won last night! Girls soccer, boys soccer, girl's softball and boys baseball all won handily last night. Three of the four teams played on James River fields. "It was an exciting night at River." said Beth Bell attendance officer who went to some of the games. Two of the wins were against George Wythe which has become a regional rival of the Knights. We've just added four bear sightings to our map of bear sightings -- and all were in Botetourt County. I don't know if that means there's an outbreak of bears in Botetourt -- or whether folks in Botetourt are just more diligent about reporting ursine encounters. I've lived in Botetourt close to 26 years and I've never seen a bear. But if you have, e-mail our resident bear spotter Matt Chittum the date, time, location, description and any photos or video and we'll post it on our bear map. It's part of our Datasphere storehouse of data. Cathy Benson, our community journalist for Botetourt, had a blog post about one particular bear sighting earlier this month. Lord Botetourt girls head to regionals after winning the Blue Ridge districtLord Botetourt's Girl Cavs soccer team beat Northside Friday night in the Blue Ridge District championship. After an undefeated season, the Cavs are on the way to regions. Senior Katelyn LePore is a driving force as a forward at LBHS on the girl's soccer team. Police release identities of two killed in crash near Eagle RockVirginia State Police have identified the two people who died Monday in a wreck on U.S. 220 involving a fire truck in Botetourt County. After a social hour where the history of the town and old year books were discussed, members of the assembly danced to big band hits and then had a old fashioned square dance Saturday night May 24. Every one appeared to be having a great deal of fun. Organized by Lee Minnix and her committee of workers, they promised the crowd year two for the event next year. National Wild Turkey Federation awards scholarshipsAt the annual banquet the local National Wild Turkey Federation branch awarded three scholarships to Botetourt students. They are Tyler Kelly of James River High School and Robert Nave, Jr. and Melissa Honaker at Lord Botetourt High School. Each student received a $500 scholarship. Photo by Ron Jaffe. Sawyer Russell heads to RegionalsJames River's Senior Sawyer Russell is hoping to do better in regions and state competition he says. He came in second in district in shot put and discus, but qualified for the next two levels. Track and field regionals begins today in Radford. State will be held next week in Radford. He has set school records in the two field events. Sawyer also played football and will go on to a college prep school to play football this fall.
