May 20, 2008Historical Society hears about Buchanan's rebirthHarry Gleason, Buchanan town revitalization manager, was the keynote speaker for the Botetourt County Historical Society meeting and public presentation at the Wilson Warehouse on Lowe Street in Buchanan on May 19. Gleason wowed the crowd of about 40 with information and before and after pictures. Buchanan twenty years ago was a dying Main Street but has reborn under the Main Street USA model said Gleason. "It's all about people and appealing to them to help and change perceptions." He displayed the structural beauty of having the buildings refurbished and historically preserved. Buchanan has more homes on historic registers than Fincastle he pointed out with a laugh. "And you can do it with out violating property rights," he noted. It was built in the 1830s when the the excitement of the Kanawaha Canal began to rise. It was a place of commerce and trade in its hey day. He noted the high water mark about 9 feet tall on a column in the large parlor room that represented the flood of 1985's entry into the building. He also spoke of how the Main Street idea has spread onto other streets and even the town park as time has gone on. He proudly noted 6.5 million dollars has been invested in reviving Buchanan. He gave tours of the old Wilson Warehouse (known for years in the 20th Century as the Buchanan Community House) after his presentation. Interested parties listen to Buchanan revitalization topics in the Wilson Warehouse in Buchanan. Our last post about the historical society was May 5. |
