May 30, 2008International Day flourishes at GreenfieldFun, soccer, crafts, music goods and cultural diversity are filling the halls today at Greenfield Elementary! Carolyn Perez and Atabeyra Guzman show some items from Puerta Rico Carolyn Perez and her daughter Atabyra Guzman are from Puerto Rico and work in the Diversity Department at Wachovia Bank. They are allowed to donate four hours of time each month to community service so this month they brought their culture to Greenfield. Perez made a dress for Guzman to use in folk lore dancing. Everything from food to goods produced by girls in foreign nations are on display. Soccer players from Mexico are assisting the PE classes today. El Rancho Viejo and the Best Wok -- two Botetourt restaurants -- sent food for the teachers and staff. Our last post about Greenfield Elementary was on May 21. Members of the Lord Botetourt International Club helped with crafts, games and country displays. Some of the countries included, China, Cambodia, Japan, India, Palestine, Melissa Amos from LBHS and Suzanne Rhoades the ESL teacher for Botetourt County Schools were instrumental in the day. LBHS students in the International Club helped through out the day. |

Kathy KabathSuzanne Rhoades is such a wonderful person who hosted foreign students at her home many times while her children were still in school and continues to cultivate relationships of every kind. She always wants to unite people and encourages them to use their gifts and talents - we are so lucky to have her in Botetourt County!

Cathy BensonI had a really wonderful time speaking with Suzanne Rhoades prior to the event as well as actually getting to go and spend time there. What a terrific way to bridge the differences in cultures with positive outreach.
I feel lucky to have been able to participate in the process!
Hooray for Greenfield, LBHS and all of those who participated!
