The Class of ‘08 shout-out begins!

greersullivan1SMALL.jpg

Awhile back, we asked graduating high school seniors from Botetourt County to write their own graduation blurb and we’d use it — and a photo — in an upcoming issue of The Botetourt View. We’d like to say congrats to Greer Sullivan of James River High School, who was the first to respond, so we’d like to share:

Greer Sullivan has been accepted by early decision into the College of Biological Science at Virginia Tech, where she will study pre-pharmacy.

If you’re a graduating senior from Botetourt County, send us your blurb — your favorite part of high school, what you’ll be doing next, and a photo — to news@botetourtview.com and we’ll use it in an upcoming issue.

Rain doesn’t dampen Breckinridge Field Day

fielddayblog3.JPG

The Breckinridge Elementary field in Fincastle was empty on field day today, but inside the gym things rocked and rolled.

A little rain could not dampen the spirits of the Breckinridge Bears. In the morning grades 3rd -5th had relays and events and in the afternoon, preschool through 2nd grade had a “field day” in the gym!

Relays are a component, matching grade level t-shirts are a component and parent volunteers help PE teacher Tony Hart keep the students moving. A particular favorite is the Army crawl through a tunnel of legs. Field Day has been an annual event for at least two decades and is a fun way to be fit.

4H Club visits Wildlife Refuge

4hblog.JPG

The Fincastle 4-H Community Club recently visited Roanoke Wildlife Rescue.

Club members learned many interesting and useful facts about wild animals in our area, including how to determine if an animal is truly orphaned, whom to call and what to do if they discover a wild animal in need. The club wishes to thank all the volunteers at Roanoke Wildlife Rescue and especially director Dorothy Runion for granting them this unique opportunity. Shown here are club members Jordyn Duffy, Anastasia Donnini, Collin Anderson, Alex Wolfe, Emily Duffy, Rescue volunteer Laurie Wallace, Valentina Donnini and Laura Anderson. The club would love to welcome any interested youth aged 9 through 18. For more information, please contact Glenda Snyder at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office at 473-8260.

Any bears in your part of Botetourt?

DataSphereLogoSmall.gif

If not, well, some of our neighbors in Botetourt have seen bears lately. We’ve just added four bear sightings to our map of bear sightings — and all were in Botetourt County. I don’t know if that means there’s an outbreak of bears in Botetourt — or whether folks in Botetourt are just more diligent about reporting ursine encounters.

I’ve lived in Botetourt close to 26 years and I’ve never seen a bear. But if you have, e-mail our resident bear spotter Matt Chittum the date, time, location, description and any photos or video and we’ll post it on our bear map.

It’s part of our Datasphere storehouse of data.

Cathy Benson, our community journalist for Botetourt, had a blog post about one particular bear sighting earlier this month.

Fifty flocked to Senior Swing in Troutville

seniorswingblog.JPG
Fifty guests filled the Troutville Town Hall for the Senior Swing Dance and as they said in the old days, “A good time was had by all!”

After a social hour where the history of the town and old year books were discussed, members of the assembly danced to big band hits and then had a old fashioned square dance Saturday night May 24. Every one appeared to be having a great deal of fun. Organized by Lee Minnix and her committee of workers, they promised the crowd year two for the event next year.
