The pineapple bed in the background brought $3000 at the Auction of the Godwin House contents.

Godwin Cottage is empty and looking for a new owner. The contents of the old home in the town of Fincastle were auctioned on Saturday June 21. It had belonged to Frances Carr who died with in the past decade, a daughter of Pete Huff who owned the remnants of the Breckinridge plantation Grove Hill Farm and also owned the property in Roanoke City where Valley View Mall is built.

Sold!

The Foundation for Roanoke Valley received the benefits from the auction and the future sale of the home. A scholarship will be established with the proceeds. The Ring family currently owns the home which is for sale for over $500,000.

The cottage got it's name from the town doctor, Dr. Godwin who lived in the home in the mid- 19th century.

The curious came out to watch the auction and so did the antique dealers. Many local folks -- Paul and Terry Tucker, Paige and Richard Ware, Jonnie Corbett, Lois Switzer, Peggy Davis, Pat Simmons, Geneva Dodd, Lee Minnix and a host of others sat and watched the antiques go for prices high and low. An antique pineapple bed sold for $3,000 and a like new refrigerator went for $40.

The home was open and though in dire need of repair it is beautiful and spacious. In the front bedroom, a floor stairwell is hidden as access to a cellar. The home is located on the corner of Jefferson and Water Streets across from the town's Big Spring park.
