July 31, 2008Edward Tulane party in Daleville Honor Mealey with Edward Tulane This summer, Honor Mealey read "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by award-winning author Kate DiCamillo. DiCamillo the author of "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "The Tale of Despereaux", a book-turned-movie to be released in December 2008. The Mealey family of three children are home schooled by their mother Misty who was a special education teacher in Northern Virginia. They are hosting an "Edward Tulane Party," since they were "fortunate enough to obtain for one week the exquisite three-foot tall porcelain doll, true to the extraordinary illustrations of Bagram Ibatoulline, that is currently visiting bookstores and libraries coast to coast". Like Despereaux, DiCamillo's Edward Tulane is being made into a movie to be released next year, said Misty. Edward is a self centered toy rabbit who can hear but not speak and the story covers his travels through life and his growth into a caring individual. "It is a story that both adults and children can appreciate." said Mealey. Honor said "I love the book." She will read a selection from the book and then they will dine on rabbit food like carrot muffins, salad and Hobo Stew. Her mother planned a scavenger hunt for items found throughout the book and an activity where children create a unique outfit for Edward (he has many costume changes throughout the book). Each child will have an opportunity to have a photo with the porcelain rabbit. Misty Mealey found his availability online at EdwardTulane.com The rabbit doll comes with a journal where the children can write notes for the author and the journal will be sent to Kate DiCamillo after Edward Tulane's journey comes to an end. After the week is over, Honor and her family will ship Edward Tulane back home where he will await another call from his faithful readers. They plan to end the party by raffling off a signed copy of "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" (signed by Edward, of course) to one lucky child. |
