On July 3 around 1:30 p.m. a fire was first noticed on Cove Mountain just north of Buchanan along Virginia 43.

As of this morning, the U.S. Forest Service continues to monitor the fire with assistance from the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Forestry out of Pulaski. The fire runs just below the Blue Ridge Parkway. At dark last night a fire department spokesman said the fire was waste high in the underbrush and had consumed at least fifty acres.
