Fire continues to smolder even with rain

Monday, July 7, 10 a.m.:

As of Saturday, the fire on Cove Mountain had burned almost 600 acres and teams from the U.S. Forest Service had been called in -- including the Augusta Hot Shots and the Jackson Shots from Jackson, Mississippi, along with members of the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The rugged terrain has been a factor in the fire which flanks both sides of the Appalachian Trail
which was closed through the weekend. Lightning may have caused the fire, but Ranger Steve Croy was not ruling out the remains of a smoldering camp fire as a possibility. "It was cool up there last week," referring to hikers coming through the area.

While Virginia 43 over the mountain to the Blue Ridge Parkway has not been closed, the signage near Buchanan encouraged through traffic not to come over the twisting road as the Forest Service fire fighters and other vehicles traveled the narrow passage.

"We'll just have to wait until the fire is contained to continue our investigation," he said. A helicopter was used to scout the fire and as in the Caldwell Mountain fire, the underbrush and dry leaves contributed to the spread of the fire.

This morning the U.S. Forest Service district office is conducting a staff meeting and will have an update for the fire sometime later this morning.
