Troutville porcelain artist featured at many galleries

bittner1stprizeblog.JPG

Lois Bittner is a prolific porcelain artist who also makes jewelery. Her Troutville home has many of her beautiful works but so do many of the galleries in western Virginia!

Bittner began porcelain art after a china painting class in Ohio, she moved from Athens, Georgia to Botetourt County almost 13 years ago and has tuned her craft since. Her paintings on porcelain tile look like a canvas except smoother almost smokey in their beauty. She frames them like paintings on canvas as well.

She fires her works in kilns at her home and has expanded into jewelery not only porcelain but also in fused art glass. She has a piece of jewelery( at left) -- a necklace selected for the current Artisans Center of Virginia in Waynesboro.

She also is part of the artists co-op at Gallery by the James in Buchanan. "We are having a meet the artists reception on Friday, August 15 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the gallery which also coincides with Evening in Buchanan."

At VTLS in Blacksburg she has a painting called "A Walk in the Woods" (below) on display.

Over in Clifton Forge she has several paintings and items on display at the Alleghany Highlands
Arts and Crafts Center.

She has studied with Vera Dickerson and Ruth Frederick, but admits she is mostly self taught. She is a founding member of the Roanoke Valley Porcelain Artists. On October 25, one the members Rosemaries Tanner will host a porcelain painting exhibition at Gallery by the James.

"I just love color and porcelain." she said with artist flourish. By viewing her art and jewelery-- the love is apparent.

I am honored to work with Lois on Oct 25th. She has been a big supporter of the Roanoke China Painters Club. She has hosted workshops at her house and as always has given encouragement to every member especially when we struggled with new concepts.
Lois deserves many thanks and all the compliments we can give. Rosemarie
