Womanless beauty pageant brought lots of laughter and good funds for the King Memorial Parsonage

The Oriskany womanless beauty pageant was hysterical. The sweet young thing “Beth” Surber (in the white blouse and brown skirt) won the contest and Jackie ( in the yellow dress) the Miss Congeniality award. Rain dampened the turnout but not the fun at the second annual Oriskany Fall Festival. Re-enactors, antiques including tractors and tons of food. For more photos, click here

BCHS Executive Director Weldon Martin presents the Emily Gordon Honts Award to George Kegley for his work in historic preservation and conservation.

On Friday night September 26, at the Botetourt County Historical Society Annual Founder’s Day Dinner, three deserving historians including long time Roanoke Times writer (1949-1994) and local historian and conservationist George Kegley received the Emily Gordon Honts Award for work in the field of historic preservation and research. Kegley lives in Monterey, a home in Northeast Roanoke that became the first in the Roanoke City to be in a conservation and perpetual historical easement according to the introduction by Historical Society Committee member Angela Coon. He has contributed much to local Botetourt County historic research and preservation as well she noted.

The other two awards went posthumously to Charles Burton of Troutville and Dr. Charles Ayers who were prolific authors in the field of local history and genealogy. Burton was highlighted for his work in locating Confederate soldiers in cemeteries in the area.

Dr. Phillip Stone, president of Bridgewater College, gave an inspiring speech about Abraham Lincoln’s family in Virginia. He interjected many facts about the great grandparents of Lincoln who lived in the Dayton area of the Shenandoah Valley. The Lincoln family in Virginia was prosperous. Abe Lincoln’s Father Thomas Lincoln hailed from there and migrated to Kentucky.

The attendees enjoyed a sumptious buffett and music from the period by A-Chord. For more pictures, click here.

Colonial Elementary goes to Camp Roanoke

Fifth graders at Colonial Elementary traveled to Camp Roanoke for a day of team building activities. Those activities included low course challenge events and one high course challenge–a 44 foot climbing tower. Activities were designed to help students improve communication and leadership skills, develop trust and teamwork among team members, and build self-confidence. In this picture, Allison McCaul in Mrs. Bychowski’s class climbs to the top of the climbing tower.Allison McCaul

Accident on I-81

See more pictures from this accident

A tractor-trailer that hit a bridge on Interstate 81 caused major delays in Botetourt County for much of the afternoon, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The accident occurred around noon on I-81 southbound at mile marker 167 near Buchanan. Traffic was backed up about 9 miles as of around 3:30 p.m., according to VDOT.  VDOT spokeswoman Heidi Coy said all lanes were clear by 5:15 p.m.

Coy said that a tractor-trailer hit the left side of a bridge over Purgatory Creek, resulting in a 70 gallon diesel and oil spill that closed the right northbound lane. The lane was closed while crews cleaned up the spill. A bridge inspection crew was also at the scene to survey the damage.

Updated football forecast: Lull in storm won’t last

Weather journalist Kevin Myatt has just posted an update with implications for tonight’s football games: The short version is, don’t be fooled into thinking you won’t get wet just because it’s not raining now. Kevin tells us: “It might not be a total downpour throughout the whole game, but some showers are likely — it’s all a matter of when the bigger mass of rain arrives, which might be teasing with the end of the games.”

If you go to either game, sounds like you need an umbrella — and also a camera. If you take photos, you can share them at news@botetourtview.com
