May 3 is the final household hazardous waste collection day

With spring cleaning underway in many households, citizens of the City of Roanoke, counties of Botetourt and Roanoke, and the Town of Vinton can take advantage of the Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, set for Sunday, May 3 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority (RVRA) Transfer Station located at 1020 Hollins Road.
This is the last regional event of this type in which residents can dispose of household items considered to be too hazardous for safe recycling or regular disposal. A new hazardous waste program will begin July 1.
As in the past, registration is required for the May 3 event to reduce the amount of time residents wait. Each participant will be given a 30-minute window to arrive at the RVRA Transfer Station to deposit their waste. There are a limited number of slots, so residents are encouraged to call 387-6225 soon to avoid waiting until the new system is implemented in July to dispose of their hazardous material.
Acceptable household hazardous wastes include oil-based paints, varnishes, thinners, fluorescent bulbs, household cleaners, bleach, polishes, kerosene, etc. No commercial waste, tires, explosives, medical waste, or radioactive materials, including smoke detectors, will be accepted. Material must be in five-gallon containers or smaller; no 55-gallon drums will be accepted.
Currently, private residents of Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and the Town of Vinton may take lead acid automobile batteries, latex-based paints, used motor oil, and used antifreeze to the Transfer Station anytime during normal operating hours. No commercial materials are allowed. This program will continue after the new hazardous waste program is implemented on July 1. Visit www.rvra.net for more information.
On July 1, 2009 a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility will be available at the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority. This new facility will be open on the third Saturday of each month, giving citizens opportunities to dispose of their hazardous materials year ‘round rather than during the three regional collection events offered in the past. At the outset, this once-per-month event will be limited to 100 residents per Saturday and will also require registration. More information about this new program will be announced soon.
For more information or to register for the May 3 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, call 387-6225.

Terrific Tuesday

12 U AAU girls basketball Super Region Tournament at Breckinridge

12 U AAU girls basketball Super Region Tournament at Breckinridge.

Hey, it’s Terrific Tuesday again– how’s everything in your neck of the woods? Thankfully it is warm again today so March is going out like a lamb. What a quick month! Hey, did anyone out there see the streaking space junk on Sunday night. The wind blew so hard at my house I would not have purposely been outside after dark. But I wish I had seen it. Here’s a link to a story about it. I  did see the movie “Knowing” this past Friday night. I found it a B on the grading scale but it you don’t know much about Bible prophesy stuff and alien population of the Earth you might not get it. Yeah, that’s an odd coupling of info for a movie premise. People in the theatre either loved it or hated it. Nick Cage wore his hang dawg look most of the movie and did a lot of drinking like he did in “Leaving Las Vegas.”

Hmmm, where to start. It was an interesting weekend for all of the AAU activity both girls and boys, Taekwando and so forth. I shoveled food for JRHS football for a couple of hours at the Boys AAU tournament held at the school big gym on Saturday. I tell you I really love Petros.  If you  haven’t eaten one –then it is also called Frito Pie and someone said that recipe was in Southern Living recently. Hoity, toity cuisine comes in all shapes and sizes.

Here’s the Petro recipe: Cut across the top an individual bag serving of Fritos, add chili, salsa, mild cheddar shredded cheese, diced onions, sour cream in that order. Eat with a spoon.  Ole’ Amigos!

Last but not least Bill Davis of Fincastle  passed away on Saturday. Bill was a great fellow and Shirley (Mimi) and the girls are going to miss him. He was President of the Troutville Lions at one time and retired from Roanoke Cement. His claim to fame for my kids was he was part of a dynamic grandparent duo that baby sat many of the kids (including them when needed) in the Fincastle area over the past 15-20 years.

Bill shot a snake out of a tree when my son Zack was there one day and after that Bill was always “the man” in Zack’s eyes.  He followed Bill every where. Julia spent more time with “Mimi and Bill” and absolutley adored them both. One of my favorite memories of Bill Davis was his laughter when my baby Julia latched on to a tricycle on our way down the sidewalk and would not let go. She shrieked, “I want to ride the bicycle at Mimi’s house!” over and over. Bill bent over double laughing but finally helped me pry her strong little fingers from the handle bars so I could deposit her in the car seat, still shrieking of course.  One thing about growing up with their kids Robin, Paige and Penny as they were frequent visitors to relatives in the Pleasant Dale community where I grew up, was I knew Mimi and Bill would be the best ever child care next to home– LOL– maybe even better! Bill always had  quite the light display at Christmas when he was able.  Heaven gained a new angel and I prefer to think that blazing light on Sunday night was Bill telling us “Good-bye, all is well.”

See ya next week!

The weather yesterday had calmed from cold and windy to pleasant  by afternoon and conditions were right for Cavalier victory. Bennett teaches Class Action at Central Academy Middle School

A Class Act at CAMS Teaching Class Action said Teresa Simmons Civics teahcer at the school.
We have curfews? Juveniles can face charges as an adult? Parents are required to send their children to school? These are just a few of the questions students investigate when Deputy Luke Bennett spends a week in the classrooms of Diane Blevins and Teresa Simmons teaching a course known as Class Action. He brings to life the study of state and local law enforcement. He has the students examine the Code of Virginia along with the court system when he shares numerous examples of situations he has encountered as a law enforcement officer. His examples are always current and applicable to the life of an every day teenager as well as an adult.
Class Action is a law-related educational program facilitated exclusively by law enforcement professionals for our school children. Class Action provides a basic understanding of state law that governs socially acceptable behavior in the home, in school, and in the community for middle and high school students and their parents. By educating our students about citizenship and the short and long term consequences of unlawful behaviors, we reduce crime, violence and substance abuse in Virginia.
Class Action provides character education and teaches children their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the Commonwealth. Children are encouraged to care about the quality of life in their schools, their homes, and their communities. For further information go here. Submitted by Teresa Simmons
