Tyree playing volleyball

Mackenzie Tyree and Zach Santolla, both seniors at Lord Botetourt High School, were honored as Wendy’s High School Heisman winners at the Virginia Tech Spring football game on Saturday April 25 in Lane Stadium.

Tyree played volleyball and basketball on District champion and regional and state candidate finals teams. She has inked a scholarship with Carson Newman to play volleyball. Santolla played football and wrestled and placed third in the state 2A wrestling finals this year. He is still undecided about his college choice.

Each year Wendy’s recognizes the nations’ most esteemed high school senior men and women for excellence in academics, athletics and community/school involvement.

Rob Schroeder Troutville's RJS builders acted as the project lead for subcontractors on the season finale house of "Extreme Makeover."

Being connected is a good thing and Rob Schroeder is connected to a good cause. His cousin Annie’s fianace John Norris, is a part of Edenton Builders in Edenton, North Carolina and when he needed help on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition ABC’s premiere Sunday night show, he called on Schroeder who is the primary in RJS Builders in Troutville.

Schroeder and many of his family members including his wife Laura and daughter Anna traveled to Jamesville, North Carolina to help the Cooper family get a new home. The family had been living in a house trailer with holes in the floor. Mr. Cooper is a wheel chair bound veteran of the Gulf War and his teen age son had a terrible accident two years ago where he lost an arm, so life hasn’t been to happy for the family for a while and they passed the Extreme Makeover panel as good candidates for a new home.

It took over 110 hours to raze the trailer and build the new home which is a log home coming in at about 2000 square feet of living space. The house is certified ADA accessible and fully furnished with the latest. The builders worked 24 hours per day to finish the home. Laura and little Anna Schroeder took plenty of candids. We have a picture gallery.

“It was grueling at times and I answered about 200 questions per hour, but I would do it again in a heart beat. We were still finishing the roof when they rolled the bus away!” said Schroeder.

Civitan Club of Botetourt does a lot of good things for many people like the Blue Ridge Autism Center, so help them find a Good Samaritan, too!

Civitans Seek Good Samaritan

For over 50 years the Civitan Club of Roanoke has sought and recognized a person in the Roanoke Valleywho best exemplifies the “Good Samaritan” in the bible. This person is one who does good things for people without any expectation of recognition or remuneration.Now the recently formed Civitan Club of Botetourt is seeking a “Good Samaritan” from Botetourt County.
Reverend Dan Coy from Parkway House of Prayer is the committee chairperson for this service project.
Letters have gone out to many of the churches from our Botetourt County area asking for their nominations.
The club is asking all Botetourt County residents to nominate their “Good Samaritan.”

If you know of someone who deserves this honor, please send a letter to Rev. Coy at P. O. Box 563,
Daleville, Virginia 24083. Please tell us what this “Samaritan” has done and why you feel this person
is worthy of this honor. It is recommended that testimonial letters accompany your letter. A panel of 3
judges who live in Botetourt County and are not members of the club will judge the entries. The
deadline for entries is May 15th.

The winner will be announced at their club’s regular meeting on June 3rd.

Steven Elkins has been a resident of Botetourt for over 12 years. He has been a painter since he was 15 and has enjoyed sharing his work with others. Recently he has begun working on a website which is still in infancy at www.artiffect.com. He has had paintings purchased from Washington state to Texas, New Jersey and Canada. Cloverdale Titans and Blue Ridge Pirates congratulate each other on a hard fought game Tuesday night ater the Titans won 14-12.

Here are a few photos of the Cloverdale Titans. They are a Dixie Youth Minor League (9-10 year old) baseball team that is part of Botetourt Rec Sports. Tuesday night was their second game after losing the season opener to the Cloverdale Pirates (9-5) at the Sports Complex over the weekend.

Gus the dog tried very hard to keep these goats out of the road.

Around 2 p.m. a vary large white dog, a Great Pyrenees by the look of him, tried his best to keep three goats out of harm’s way near the intersection of Trinity Road and Lee Highway, north Route 11. Deborah Quiran, the owner of Delaine’s, called animal control when the goats and dog ran through her yard.

Soon three animal control trucks, including Animal Control Officer A.T. Thrasher pictured above, an investigator and a deputy arrived. The goats one and two surrendered easily and the dog, whose name is Gus, kept protecting the Nannie goat. They ran around and around the plumbing company yard. The dog barked at the officers and he was foaming a bit from near exhaustion as Nannie stayed right with him. The officers were very calm towards the dog and goat, but could not capture them. Finally a neighbor offered some baloney and the owner came back with sweet feed and dog food. Nannie was captured and loaded into the truck for a trip home.

All was getting back to normal as the goats were captured and Gus began to calm down. Even though Animal Control had trucks with lights flashing parked along Route 11, a few folks on Lee Highway slammed on brakes when Nannie and Gus entered the highway a few times. Fortunately no one or animal was injured and as herd dogs go, Gus earned his keep today trying to keep his goats safe!
