Citizens Convenience Center now open for local waste management

Greg Hannah is in charge of the County's waste management site called the Citizens Convenience Center.
As part of the team at Public Works, Greg Hannah manages the landfill area for Botetourt County and now he has new digs at the Citizens Convenience Center (CCC) next to the retired landfill west on Catawba Road, Rt. 779 past Roanoke Cement. He spoke with the BV about the CCC. Still under construction, the final touches are a few weeks away, but the paved road in and out alone makes the trip much more effortless for the folks dumping refuse to be hauled to another locality. A simple weight system at the new gate house and an improved recycling center are highlights of the new CCC.
The trash bearer enters at a temporary entrance below the CCC, bears to the left past recycling and a metal bearing dumpster and pulls up the hill into a parking space. Yes, a marked parking space. (For those who recall the landfill, this is almost exotic!) The trash is tossed down a long slide from the sides into the hopper. The hopper compacts the trash as loads of garbage bags slide into the man made steel ravine!
The customer then departs via the weight house for weight and payment. “Currently, the recycling center is on the lower level but will move to the main level as soon as everything up top is complete,” said Hannah pointing to the area to the left of the weight house. We have a short photo gallery of the new set up.
Landscaping and grass seeding should take place soon and then the 21st century art of trash disposal will be complete in Botetourt County. “Trips will be much quicker and more efficient and have been thus far,” Hannah told the BV. Saturdays will never be the same.
