Octopus ride arm falls with kids aboard at Buchanan Carnival

One of the cars of the octopus pictured here Friday night collapsed six feet from the ground as the ride stopped last night June 29. Children were in the bucket but no one was seriously hurt.
The ride all night got a little less thrilling when a car on the Octopus ride collapsed about six feet from the ground last night. Children were in the ride cart when the arm fell but other than a bump on the head, no one was seriously injured.
Buchanan Fireman and Carnival coordinator Marty Rickman said this morning that immediately the ride inspector from Rocky Mount traveled to Buchanan and inspected all of the rides again. They think perhaps a piece of metal on the arm broke, but he is not sure. He planned to talk with the carnival ride owner later this morning. The Octopus will be out of commission until further notice.
“The inspector said the rest of the rides are fine,” said Rickman. “We have a special tonight for athletes at James River and they will get a food coupon.” Ride all night for $20 again tonight.
