Greenfield Elementary will be hosting a Back To School and Pay Your School Fees event on August 17, 2009. This will give parents and students the opportunity to bring school supplies, pay school fees, place funds on lunch accounts and join Greenfield’s PTA. Additionally, each classroom teacher will spend a portion of the time reviewing class routines, grade level content and expectations and answering parent questions. When you arrive, please go directly to your child’s assigned classroom.

• Kindergarten and 5th grade: 2 to 3:30 p.m.
• 1st and 2nd grade: 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
• 3rd and 4th grade: 5 to 6:15 p.m.

The first PTA meeting of the school year will be September 15, 2009 at 6 p.m. The PTA meeting will be followed by a 5th grade performace beginning at 7 p.m.

All week the Roanoke Road has been full of construction of turn lanes in front of the new Food Lion in Daleville. The store is located on the Ntelos side of US 220 north and directly across from the Daleville Town Center. Here’s the scoop! The Chamber of Commerce will hold an After Hours event there on Tuesday, August 18 from 5p.m.- 7 p.m. which is a members only event. The store will officially open for business on Wednesday August 19! So when the kids clamber up the steps of the school bus on the first day of school, hop in the car and drive over to the opening!

Calvin Walters who is currently manager of the Salem Food Lion is the store manager for the new Daleville store and when spoken to by phone, he said is excited about the  new store!

Meritha Rucker  spent two weeks traveling in Greece. She shared these photos of her vaction. She said Greece is wonderful. She visited ancient ruins, the town in Santorini filmed in ” The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and many of the smaller islands. While a student at Hollins she had visited Greece but wanted to go back, “Now I have seen all of it!” she said.

On July 18th, Pack 82 worked on their fishing Beltloop and pin at the Botetourt Country Club Pond near the Hole #2 Tee Box. Using nightcrawlers for bait; our smallest scout, Jacob Helms caught the biggest fish, a 15" large mouth bass.

Cub Scout Pack 82, meets every Thursday during the school year, at 6:30pm in the Church of the Transfiguration, on Route 220 North, just before the Fincastle town line. If you are playing sports on Thursdays, that’s great! Pack 82 is an active group, with weekend activities and awards in more than 40 Sports and Academic areas.

First to fifth grader boys are invited to visit the pack and see what scouting offers for their entire family.

Cub Scout Pack 82 has lots of fun family activities planned for this fall, including picnics and hikes; campfires, Camp Ins (nights at the museums!), Troutoree Fishing Tournament at Powhatan, Spookoree Camp Out at Camp AltaMons, Gymnastics Night, Ski weekends at Winterplace, fun activities and adventures each week, Annual Blue & Gold Banquet, Pinewood Derby Races, Trailblazer Weekend, Gold Rush Camp Out, attending the Nascar Truck Race at Martinsville Speedway, special trips to fun and interesting places, not to mention earning awards including belt loops, pins and patches. Matthew Sullivan Smith has been accepted by Hampden-Sydney College and will begin classes in August 2009. Matt is enrolling with an Alumni Award and is a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School. He is the son of Randy & Margaret Smith of Daleville.

Local naturalist Ben Schrader has kept us entertained for the past 6 weeks with photos taken with motion cameras along the Appalachian Trail in Botetourt County.

Here’s his summary:

“This site captured 75 photos in 6 weeks of 10 different species. Both sites had coyotes but this is the only bobcat the last 6 weeks. The second set produced 66 photos in 6 weeks of 6 species mostly bears. The bears several times changed the direction of the camera away from my scent trap. No camera damage but the bracket is stressed. Smithsonian wants still photos, but this playful cub would have made a nice video. I had scent on the bottom side of the pole. They must think anything with that much odor should have more meat so momma checks it out also.”

Buchanan area churches had a special guest on the last night of Vacation Bible School during its ice cream social. This year’s theme was Boomerang Express. A live kangaroo visited from the Buchanan Carnival. The kangaroo and his owner are shown with some of the Pre-K students and Landon Barger.
