VDOT gears up for snow! Get ready!

Get those groceries before the snowfall begins!

Get those groceries before the snowfall begins!

With snow in the forecast for southwestern Virginia during the overnight hours on Friday, Jan.29 and on Saturday, Jan. 30, crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are gearing up for snow removal. In advance of the storm, VDOT and contractor crews have pre-treated the interstates and many major roads throughout the region.

Equipment operators will be monitoring road conditions beginning this afternoon and will start to plow and treat roads when precipitation begins. As with any winter weather event, snow plow operators will focus their initial efforts on the interstates and primary roads (those numbered 1-599).

Once precipitation begins, motorists are encouraged to delay travel if possible to give snow plow drivers time to clear the roads.

The 12-county VDOT Salem District serves Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke counties.

Before travelling, motorists can find current road conditions by calling 511 or visiting www.511Virginia.org.

As always, you can keep up with weather news on weather journalist Kevin Myatt’s Weather Journal blog.

And once the snow starts falling, you can show photos at news@botetourtview.com
