Troutville Gold Award recipient honored at Girl Scout Reception

Mary Pate with Daisy Katie Belle Harrison.

Mary Pate of Troutville was among those recognized June 27 at a reception honoring girls who have earned the highest achievement in Girl Scouting:  the prestigious Gold Award.  To do so, Mary had to prove her leadership abilities by designing and carrying out a plan of activities that included 65 hours of volunteer community service, career exploration, and specialized interest projects.  A member of Girl Scout Troop 626 of Botetourt service unit, Mary helped children at two local daycare centers develop an appreciation for music by showing them how to make musical instruments inexpensively out of household items.   She is shown here with Katie Belle Harrison, a member of Girl Scout Daisy Troop 87, who presented Mary with official Girl Scout flowers:  Daisies, of course.

Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council is a leadership program for girls that develops life skills in business, science, and technology; provides adventures and challenges in sports, the environment, and the great outdoors; and encourages girls to give back to their communities through service projects conducted locally, across the United States, and internationally.

Historic Fincastle, Inc. thanks Fincastle and Botetourt Community

The Reinhart-Luster house on Main Street in Fincastle was the beautiful setting for the Historic Fincastle, Inc. sponsored Raise the Roof event on June 19, 2010.  The evening was fun filled for the many who attended and an opportunity for citizens to view the Reinhart-Luster house refurbishment, courtesy of John Lispcomb and David McCray.  The house has been saved from disrepair and restored to a beautiful single family home.  We thank John and David for their efforts to complete the house in time for this event and being so generous in allowing the Raise the Roof Committee to be in the house in advance of the event.

This fundraising event for Historic Fincastle, Inc is specifically targeted to fund the replacement of the James Matten Early Cabin cedar shake roof.  Although, HFI repaired some shingles last year, the roof will continue to deteriorate if the entire roof is not replaced.  HFI has estimated that $10,000 will be needed to fund the roof replacement.  The event raised nearly 50% of the $10,000 goal.  We would like to thank all the attendees, volunteers, artists, individual donators, musicians, businesses, and committee members for making Raise the Roof a success.
