When was the last time James River defeated LB in football?
That’s been a frequent question ever since James River’s 15-9 upset of Lord Botetourt on Friday night.
We’ve heard two things — both 1995 and 1980.
We’ve rummaged through the Roanoke Times archives and found . . . Yes, on Sept. 15, 1995, James River defeated Lord Botetourt 18-15. Any James River victories since then?
If not, we can say this is the first James River victory over LB in football since 1995.
Here’s the 1995 account in The Roanoke Times (much briefer than the write-up in Saturday’s paper, we notice):
Shahan Burrell scored two touchdowns and rushed for 117 yards Friday night as James River defeated Lord Botetourt 18-15 in a clash of county rivals in Daleville.
Burrell ran 75 yards with a screen pass from quarterback Travis Blankenship with a minute left in the first half to give James River (2-1) an 18-7 lead. Blankenship had a 2-yard touchdown run for James River’s first points, and Burrell got his second touchdown on a 4-yard run.
Wesley Cox scored both touchdowns and rushed for 79 yards to lead the Lord Botetourt offense. He scored on runs of 4 yards in the first quarter and 7 yards in the third. Rocky Lark added 73 yards on 12 carries for the Cavaliers.
Lord Botetourt (0-2) drove to the James River 15 in the fourth quarter, but missed a 32-yard field-goal attempt.
