The James River Knights girl’s volleyball team is the 2010 state 1A champions! James River has two state championship teams in one year! The girls join the top spot with the boys basketball team as state champions and will be honored at Buchanan firehouse at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 21. The public is encouraged to attend.
The Knights played like champions as well. They lost the first game, won two consecutive games, lost the fourth and then came back to win the final game 15-11 over a tough and determined Gate City team.
River fans turned out in support and roared. They became the 7th player on the court. It was the stuff dreams are made of and everyone on the bench, on the court and the fans in the stands exploded when the Knights scored point 15 in Game 5!
The net was tough all day. Gate City had some tall, tough players who could kill the ball but Hailey Cook dug, dug dug as well as the River defense responded over and over to the Gate City attack.
Maribeth Kern had 21 serves, 7 aces, 1 block and 21 kills to lead the Knights stat sheet. Rachel Hepler had 20 serves, Conner Sprinkle 15, Savannah Sharkey 15, Taylor Statome 13 and Emily Smith 12. Sharkey had three blocks as well. Renee Smith also had 6 kills and Sharkey 10.
The Knights also won the Sportsmanship award for the tourney. Coach Audrey Easter accepted both trophies from AD Sheila Proffitt, Principal Jamie Talbott and Assistant Principal Mike Ketron. Each girl received a championship medal as well.
Again, the team will be honored at 1 p.m. Sunday in Buchanan.
