It’s not too early to send out a reminder: You can share your prom photos at news@botetourtview.com.

See where Botetourt winds up in proposed redistricting plans

The Republicans who control the House of Delegates and the Democrats who control the state Senate released their respective redistricting plans late Tuesday.

Not surprisingly, each party seeks to help itself and hurt the other.

* The House plan would keep the Cloverdale precinct in a district that snakes through eastern Roanoke County into Southwest Roanoke County; that district is now represented by Del. Bill Cleaveland, R-Botetourt.

The rest of Botetourt would stay in the district now represented by Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford, except that the Bedford portion of that district would be redrawn pretty extensively — and the district would extend up into Alleghany County.

* The Senate plan would move Botetourt County into a district that would run from Craig County through Botetourt and Bedford to Lynchburg — putting state Sen. Ralph Smith, R-Botetourt, and state Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, in the same district. Smith has said he might move to keep that from happening.

You can see the maps and get more info over on our Blue Ridge Caucus politics blog.

No word yet on proposed congressional district maps.

PETA wants to sponsor and rename I-81 rest area at Troutville

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced an initiative last week that would allow for sponsorships at Virginia’s highway rest areas to help offset the cost of operating the facilities.

This probably wasn’t what the governor had in mind, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants in on the action. PETA has sent a letter to the Virginia Department of Transportation expressing its interest in sponsoring the Interstate 81 rest stop in Troutville and renaming it the “Fishing Hurts” rest area.

We have more details over on our Blue Ridge Caucus politics blog.

Photo: Fincastle DI team places, goes to state competition

Fincastle Destination Imagination Team the Fo-Shizzles win 1st place in their division and are going on to the state competition in Crozet VA on Saturday April 2nd. This is the 2nd year in a row that the team has won the regional competition and have gone on to states. The team is split this year between CAMS and Breckinridge. Rachel Lybolt, Taylore Sydnor and Olivia Simmons (CAMS). Tara Malloy and Lydia Sydnor (Breckinridge) The team’s Manager is Meegan Lybolt. The regional competition was held on March 19th at Glenvar Middle School in Roanoke. The team chose challenge D, Mythology Mission. They had to research the cultures of their choice of 6 different countries, research a mythical creature that is found in each of the countries. Then create a storyline that involves a mission utilizing the culture and mythical creatures for each of the 6 countries. At the competition there are 2 “Materials” and 1 “Connector” that are randomly chosen that had to become part of their mission, each representing something from the country, that is also randomly selected on competition day. The materials and connector that were randomly pulled just before their performance were an umbrella, embroidery hoop and mailing labels. During the skit, after each of these items are identified as something from the countries culture, they then had to be merged together somehow to create a master prop. This then had to also become part of their mission. They were given 5 minutes to prepare their skit, and 5 minutes to perform it for the appraisers. The country that was randomly chosen was China. The storyline was that the girls were Shi Shi’s, mythical creatures that guarded ancient buildings and temples. Their mission was to get rid of the bad spirit that was invading the Grand Theater of Ancient China. Their umbrella was a cane, with ancient Chinese engravings on it, the Embroidery hoop was a jeweled bracelet with the Chinese alphabet, and the mailing labels, were pieces of silk that was grown by the local farmers . During their skit they had to also pick up an “unexpected problem” that was written on a piece of paper and left for them to pick up during their performance. It was “trees begin walking” They had to incorporate this into their skit, and then successfully over come it. The master prop they created was a machine that would scare the spirit and make it disappear. The girls did an amazing job. Their mission was then complete! Good Luck to the girls at their State Competition. If they place 1st or 2nd in their division, they will move on to the Global competition which is held in May.
