Scothorn Responds with endorsements from Goodlatte, Cleaveland, Habeeb et al
Mac Scothorn Valley District Republican Candidate responded this evening to recent remarks by write in candidate Don Assaid. The following are endorsements by various Scothorn supporters.
“Mac Scothorn is a leader with integrity and principle who will help bring a positive focus and vision for the future of Botetourt County on Board of Supervisors.”
–Congressman Bob Goodlatte
“As a voter in the Valley district, I support and endorse Mac Scothorn for Supervisor for the Valley District of Botetourt County. I believe Mac will be an effective supervisor, able to govern in a manner that will promote the best interests of the citizens of Botetourt County.”
“Unfortunately, I cannot and will not say the same for Don Assaid. In my view, Mr. Assaid, with his recent conduct and accusations against the Sheriff, the State Police, the Circuit Court Judge, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and other elected officials, has clearly established his inability to put the welfare of Botetourt County above his own self interests. These are not the qualities of a leader.”
–Delegate Bill Cleaveland
“I support Republican Dr. Mac Scothorn for Valley District Supervisor because Mac has shown his commitment and concern for Botetourt County through his service on the Board of Botetourt Parks and Recreation and his participation on the Economic Development Planning Committee. Mac will continue to serve the constituents of the Valley with the same care, integrity and respect that he has shown his patients at Vistar Eye Center as he focuses on the needs and priorities of the county. Join me in supporting Mac Scothorn by voting this Tuesday, November 8th.”
–Delegate Greg Habeeb
“As a voter in the Valley District, I believe Mac Scothorn will restore respect to the Board of Supervisors. He has demonstrated an ability to get things done in our community without resorting to name calling or wild accusations. Mr. Assaid has shown a disrespect to the State Police, the Sheriff’’s Department and the men and women that work to keep our families safe. A vote for Assaid is a vote against public safety. Just ask a deputy or a trooper.”
–Robert Perry, Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Virginia State Police (Retired)
“As Chairman of the Botetourt County Republican Committee, I am a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Dr. Mac Scothorn for Valley District Supervisor. Mac not only fulfilled the requirements for a Republican candidate, he also won an overwhelming majority of the vote in the Republican Mass Meeting on August 11th, 2011. He has since earned endorsements from many local Republican elected officials.
Conversely, Don Assaid broke his pledge on the Declaration of Candidacy Form he signed on July 21st, 2011 and was subsequently removed from the Botetourt County Republican Committee as necessitated by the Republican State Party rules. He is no longer a Republican.”
–Christine Broughton, Botetourt County Republican Chairman

Don Assaid has acted like a spoiled child who did not get his way. He embarrassed himself, the citizens of Botetourt County, and the public officials who serve them. And to what end? Here’s hoping Mac Scothorn is our next Republican representive from the Valley district, and all of us can move on…..
Congrats on the well deserved endorsements.
Well it is nice to see all the “heavy hitters” lined up against me for next Tuesday but this election will be decided by the voters of Valley District and not by Bill Cleaveland or Bob Goodlatte or Greg Habeeb. As for acting like a “spoiled child”, I guess if you consider fighting against selective enforcement of the election laws, special treatment for Buchanan’s favorite son, malicious prosecution of a personal friend on a baseless fraud charge and good ole boy cronyism in Botetourt County being the actions of a spoiled brat, then that is your prerogative. Personally, I believe that my constituents care about fair elections and equal treatment under the law.
Do I care about winning the election – you bet I do. Just like I care about Terry Austin stacking the Board with those he can control to achieve his agenda of more spending and higher taxes and being able to select the new Administrator of his choice. That is why, win or lose on Tuesday, I will continue the fight to expose the unethical and possibly illegal activities of public officials in improperly keeping me off the ballot.
Ken Cuccinelli got kicked out of the Republican Party last month when he endorsed Janis for Commonwealth Atty (like Assaid, Janis is a Republican running as an Independent). (http://bearingdrift.com/2011/10/15/cantor-bolling-cuccinelli-howell-purged-from-local-gop-committees/) Christine Broughton is also Bob Goodlatte’s political administrator — two endorsements for the price of one may come in handy as the party seems to be “shrinking” from its conservative and constitutional base!
