Feeders schools to come with approved school attendance line change
Beginning next fall, Botetourt schools will operate in a feeder school system. Transportation and transportation costs were key issues on the decision to move toward feeder schools. During a relatively quick school board meeting, the members unanimously voted to change the attendance lines at the April 12 monthly meeting.
A basic explanation of the process which began in December is as follows:
With the exception of Greenfield Elementary School, the rest of the schools will focus toward a particular high school from Kindergarten forward. Here is the proposed lay out:
Breckinridge, Central Academy Middle School (CAMS,) James River
Buchanan, CAMS, James River
Eagle Rock, CAMS, James River
Troutville, Read Mountain, Lord Botetourt
Colonial , Read Mountain, Lord Botetourt
Cloverdale, Read Mountain, Lord Botetourt
Greenfield, CAMS, Lord Botetourt
Greenfield, RMMS, Lord Botetourt
Greenfield will continue to send some students like those in Sommersby Subdivision to CAMS and remain in the Lord Botetourt District. However, the ability for the school board to grant students admission to JRHS from that area on a case by case basis, will continue. “Greenfield at this time still does not lend itself as a feeder school one way or the other without construction on the next school level.
Buchanan will gain the students from Troutville and Troutville will get Gravel Hill Road area students from Breckinridge.
Last month about 80 people attended a meeting asking how the line change would affect their children. On a case by case basis the school board will address concerns and school attendance issues.
