Cicadas or the 17 Year Locust crawling out in your neighborhood?
The Botetourt View has spoken with numerous folks telling of the invasion of the 17 year locusts or cicadas in Botetourt County. Kinda of creepy and will soon be loud! Laurie and Scott Spangler sent some pics of the invasion in Blue Ridge.
Laurie Spangler said, “They are really thick at our home and our neighbors. There are so many I have to watch where I step and knock them off my clothes as they climb up my legs.”
“I did some online research and found that Brood I ( the Blue Ridge Brood) of the periodical cicadas is due to appear. It is creepily amazing to watch their life cycle unfold before our eyes.”
Below are two sources, that I looked up info on cicadas:

In the old days people ass0ciated the locust with everything from war to famine to divine plague. Tracie Ragone of Daleville said they are overrun in Tinker View Gardens behind LBHS. The ground is undulating with red bugs eating the discarded skin. We may have a photo of that later.

Yes, they’re here on Timber Ridge also. Began seeing and hearing them this past weekend.
Always a welcome sound in late spring evenings at dusk when I was growing up in Louisiana. Hunting the shells to play with was better than Easter egg hunting because there was just a lot you could do with them if you got creative.
We have them in Vinton as well.
They are definitely here in Fincastle!!
