New taxation ammendment in Botetourt County code to assist elderly and disabled persons

Guy Caldwell asked about elderly and disabled real estate tax relief criteria.

A committee made  up of Billy Martin and Jack Leffel  on the BOS , county Administrator, Kathleen Guzi and Finace Director Tony Zerilla with the help of Commissioner of Revenue Rodney Spickard and County Treasurer Bill Arney. Ch. 23 of the Botetourt Code.

The new ordinance is as follows to qualify for additional tax relief.The committee  also voted to  distribute flyers so the word gets out to the appropriate people.

Exemption of incomes  of each relative living in the home increased from the first $6,500 to $7,Increased net combined networth from $150,000 to $175,000. Changed the 2012 filing deadline to July 1, 2012. Changed the exemption percentages as below:

Income: $20, 000 or below  90% exemption.

$20,0001 to $25,000  75% exemption

$25,01- $30,000   50% exemption

$30, 001 – $40,000  30% exemption

Guy Caldwell of Runaway Village was the only person to speak. While he said his questions were answered listening in the prehearing explanation, but he was till upset over the 8% real estate tax increase.

Martin made the motion and the board approved the code change.
