Parks and rec lists upcoming activities

Botetourt Parks and Recreation has some great warm weather activities coming up beginning in May. Listed below are some activities you, or your family members, may want to participate in.
* Through June 3, 2012 – Every Sunday from 4 to 5PM at Cloverdale Elementary Tball Field 1 – Great Beginnings Tball/Sball Clinic with Ed Green. This clinic, which is five sessions, is targeted for 4, 5, 6 and 7 year olds, and their parents, and gives them the opportunity to learn basic motor skills needed to move on to more organized sports in the upcoming years. They will participate in activities using tball and softball to develop their motor skills, cognitive abilities and social interaction.

* May 19, 2012, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, NRA Youth Shooting Clinic, to be held at Ridge Rifle Shooting Range. Participants must be ages 8 to 18. Free admission and parking for everyone. To register or for more information, please contact the following:

Each registered youth will be required to attend a firearms safety class focusing on safe operation and handling. Lunch will be provided by the Ridge Rifle Association.
* Botetourt Children’s Fishing Carnival will take place on June 2, 2012, from 9AM to 1:00 PM. at the Buchanan Carnival Grounds. There will be team fishing, casting contest, fishing for the largest fish, goldfish eating contest and a worm guessing contest, and many children’s games. Lunch will be served from 11 am to 1:00 pm. Come on out with your fishing pole and enjoy a fun-filled day of fishing and other activities. COST IS FREE. Registration will be taken at the event.

* For the ecologically-minded individual, join Kelly Peters for Eco-Friendly Rain Barrels on May 19, 2012, from 9AM to 11AM, at Blue Ridge Park Large Pavilion. Participants will assemble and take home a gravity-fed rain barrel assembled from a recycled food grade plastic barrel. The barrel will store 55 gallons of supplemental non-drinkable water. Help the environment by collecting rain water and water your vegetable plants, shrubs and house plants. Price of this class is $65.00.
