UDC Essay contest deadline Aug 1
Historical Essay Contest Sponsored by UDC—Due August 1st
The Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is holding its annual essay contest. The essay topics concern the identity of specific Confederate personalities and should answer the question “Who Am I?”
For students Grades 4th through 6th, the personality is Belle Boyd; for students Grades 7th through 9th, the personality is Antonia Ford; and for Grades 10th through 12th, Laura Ratcliffe. Essays may be a maximum of 1,000 words and may be handwritten or typed on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Format guidelines and specific submittal details are available at www.fincastlechapter797.com or by contacting Debra McClane at dmcclane1@verizon.net.
The essays must be mailed to the Fincastle Chapter 797 UDC Historian and postmarked by August 1. No late essays can be accepted.
The Virginia Division will announce the winners at its October conference, which will be held in Roanoke. Statewide winners in each age group receive $50.00 from the Virginia Division. The Fincastle Chapter also will award $10.00 to the best essay in each group.
