Accident update: No apparent injuries, but James River golf team involved

James River golfers mill around with parents while damaged vehicle is being towed away from accident scene on Springwood Road.

Some members of the James River golf team were involved in this afternoon’s accident on Springwood Road, but “everybody is standing and looking good,” according to Coach Carol Brenner.

Initial accounts of  injuries appear unfounded, based on the latest reports from the scene.

Three vehicles were involved and are being towed away.

The accident took place west of Dave’s Garage on Springwood Road just before 4 p.m. today.

Every afternoon the team leaves JRHS to go to Botetourt Golf and Swim Club to practice.

The speed limit down Springwood rd. needs to be much lower not only for the HS kids but the bus drivers and the general public.. When something says 55 it actually means you can go 65-70 that is a known fact. No one (well I do) goes 70 on I-81.

This is also true of the speed limit in the town of Buchanan. The speed limit past where all the buses leave Buchanan Elementary School is 55. Who ever heard of a school bus having to pull out into 55 mph roads, at a curve in fact. VDOT needs to be called on both places. Although Don’t expect them to do much about it. Our estemed Governor says speed limits should be higher+++ so what are we to do.

This past summer the speed limit on Springwood Road from Fincastle to “town of Springwood” was changed to 40 mph through Springwood which is 25 mph then 35 mph until Narrow Passage Road unless the flashing school sign is on then 25 mph. VDOT and Botetourt County Sheriff’s Dept are working hard to keep BoCo folks safe. Hopefully, folks will heed the new speed limits!

I have seen no new posting of the 40 mph limit. The most ridiculous part of the speed limit is 35 across the bridge to the school. I agree with safe driving of this road but 35 really? This is nothing but a speed trap after you cross the bridge and enter the curve. Biggest thing they can continually do is keep the brush and limbs from encroaching onto the roadway through the area from Timber Ridge to Springwood. Also VDOT needs to fix the numerous road edges that have been eroded. This accident happened due to following to close with kids trying to stay on each others bumper driving Springwood. No speed limit would have kept them from this as I witness it everyday I drive this road.

The new speed limit signs ARE posted in several places along Springwood Rd. Hopefully this will slow down not only the student drivers, BUT the parents who drive their students to and from JR daily driving down. Many drive down the middle of the road while talking on their cell phones! There are numerous farmers who farm along this road and they deserve as much right to be on the road as anyone else. Deer also frequently cross the road and it is not limited to just mainly the fall season anymore

Knight Alun you are correct they are in SEVERAL(3) places fron fincastle to Springwfact of not knowingood(let’s see thats about a 6-7 mile stretch). Also a couple were noted stuck back in tree lines. not very good placement and also NO notification to the public in print or anywhere else. I’m sure the deputies would be compassionate when pulling over and someone pleading ignorance to the fact of not knowing about this. I DON”T THINK SO!!!! Also speed limits and deer crossing have nothing in common as does parents driving and talking on cells. the whole complaint is no one knew about this change but JR because they announced it over the PA system at the school. Today I drove down the road and one of the “farmers” was on his Sunday drive in his pickup doing 30.Know what I did, I passed him doing 45. It goes both ways. Either do the frigging spped limit or get off the road.
